Star Trek is the final frontier, and it’s also an endless source of creativity across multiple decades. While every iteration isn’t equal in quality, Star Trek as a whole has challenged its viewers time and time again, and delivered tons of unique stories with original characters.
That’s why so many people flock to specific series, or stick with just a few. If you think of the phrase “Star Trek” and close your eyes, you’ll probably picture a captain, or a standout character like Worf from The Next Generation.
The characters drive the story and are often defined by who is playing the captain at any given time. For Star Trek: Outposts, the story is taking a decidedly different direction.
Star Trek: Outposts Unknown is out today on Steam, taking players to the far corners of the X’Lehari System in the 23rd century (it’s “alongside” the era showcased in the* Strange New Worlds *TV series). Here’s an overview of what you can expect:
“Lead your crew across strange new worlds in this narrative-driven outpost builder! Research, explore, and build as you face a mysterious cosmic force that threatens a new ally. Your adventure awaits, Captain! Construct complex research facilities across strange new worlds in the first-ever outpost builder set in the Star Trek universe.”
In Outposts, you’ll become the captain, creating a new avatar to lead this corner of the universe. While many Star Trek games let you play the captain, this one lets you run rampant in the X’Lehari System. In your own corner of the galaxy:
“Explore diverse tech and buildings trees, and carefully choose which structures will help explore and build as you face a mysterious cosmic force that threatens all life in the system. Explore the X’Lehari System with a completely original Star Trek story set in the 23rd century, alongside the era depicted in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Traverse through unique environments, meet new characters, and use iconic technology in your mission to render aid to a fragile civilization’s impending catastrophe.”
It has a ton of potential, and if you’re curious, it might be worth wishlisting to see how it lands at launch.
It’s staggering, just how many Star Trek projects are coming out, even as the mainline series is taking a hiatus. Earlier this year, Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown was released, a survival game where you control the well-being of the entire crew. It was released to “mostly positive” reviews on Steam, including this one:
“Played the Demo and then bought the game. Simple What if Scenario featuring the sights and sounds of USS Voyager, is it the best game ever? No. Is it fun? Yes. 30$ game featuring more or less the same gameplay loop.”
There’s more on the way, too. In the future, we’ll also see Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, which is taking the series in a bold new direction. It’s clear that Star Trek has plenty left to give, especially in the gaming arena.
