‘Supernatural’ Meets ‘What We Do In the Shadows’ in Prime Video’s Near-Perfect Fantasy Series

Jessica is a journalist, editor, TCA critic, and multimedia storyteller with a decade of experience covering pop culture, film, TV, women’s sports, lifestyle, and more. She earned her degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a focus in creative writing before moving to N.Y.C. and getting her start at The Huffington Post. (She still misses those nap pods.) She’s covered multiple film festivals, recapped some of your favorite series, worked too many red carpets to count, and even yapped on a podcast or two. When she’s not interviewing your favorite showrunner or ranking Ryan Gosling’s best roles for places like UPROXX, Teen Vogue, Marie Claire, The Daily Beast, and Cosmopolitan, she’s busy being a full-time hype woman to her cat, Finn. You can find her on Bluesky and, sadly, Twitter.

The apocalypse is on the schedule, and the two beings best placed to stop it would mostly like to keep their lunch plans. That’s the setup of Good Omens, Prime Video’s fantasy series starring Michael Sheen as Aziraphale, an angel who runs a Soho bookshop, and David Tennant as Crowley, a demon with the kind of closet Anna Wintour might envy. Two charismatic leads who have been quietly covering for each other since Eden, and aren’t particularly thrilled that Heaven and Hell want to end the world they’ve gotten comfortable in. The show adapts **Terry Pratchett **and Neil Gaiman’s 1990 novel of the same name, blending two genres most TV series refuse to touch. It’s a fairly odd couple tale with a supernatural tinge and just enough dark comedy to give the whole thing color. The full run is just 13 episodes split into two seasons plus a 90-minute finale that dropped this past May. You can easily finish it in a weekend, and it’s so good, you’ll want to.

If you spent years with the Winchesters, the setup will feel familiar. Heaven and Hell are both treating Earth like a checkerboard, the prophecies keep getting botched, and the whole apocalypse depends on one kid. In Season 1 that kid is the Antichrist, Adam Young (Sam Taylor Buck), an 11-year-old in a sleepy English village who has no idea what he is and mostly wants to hang out with his friends. Aziraphale and Crowley were supposed to be keeping an eye on him and lost track of the kid at birth, which is pretty much the level of competence everyone in this show operates at.

Four of the largest communities on the planet, and four completely different reasons to belong to one. Here is yours, what it would give you, and the argument you would be having within a week.

You belong to the fandom that is really about comfort. Hogwarts works on people because it is a place rather than a plot, and the pull is not the wizard war so much as the corridors, the food, the weather and the sense that somebody is expecting

You belong to the deepest fandom on this list, the one where somebody has always read further than you and is quietly delighted to say so. Middle-earth rewards patience more than any other world in popular culture.

You belong to the loudest and largest tent of the four, the one where three generations are all watching the same thing and none of them agree about any of it. That disagreement is not a flaw in this fandom, it is the main activity.

You belong to the thinking fandom, the one that turns up for the argument rather than the explosion. Trek has always been a series of ethical problems in space, and the people who love it love being asked what they would have done.

**Supernatural played this kind of story as a road-trip drama, but Good Omens treats it like an office comedy. Heaven looks like a sterile corporate headquarters with awful management, and Hell is a damp basement where nobody can find the right form. Even the Four Horsemen show up on motorcycles. Most of the jokes come from the fact that the people in charge of ending the world aren’t very good at their jobs.

The plot is fun, but you’re really here for the vibes. Tennant gives Crowley sunglasses he almost never takes off and a habit of loudly not caring about anything or anyone. Sheen’s Aziraphale is fussy and polite and very into his first editions. The show knows their scenes together are the main event and gives them plenty of room to chew the scenery. Some of the best moments are just the two of them on a bench in St. James’s Park, feeding ducks and arguing about whose side is worse.

Season 2 leans into that even more, with a mystery that starts when the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) turns up at the bookshop with no memory of who he is. (Hamm is clearly having a great time playing someone that dim.) Without spoiling anything, the end of Season 2 will ruin your week.
