Aaron Sorkin’s ‘Social Network’ Follow-Up Officially Falls Short at the Box Office

Is it a legacy sequel, a spin-off, or a reboot? Fans clearly didn’t care to find out, as The Social Reckoning underperformed in its box-office debut. The movie was marketed as a continuation of the generational classic 2010 film The Social Network, but without the involvement of director David Fincher or any of the acclaimed cast members. The only member of the original creative team who returned is Aaron Sorkin, who serves as both the writer and director this time around. Sorkin won an Oscar for writing The Social Network, a film many agree was robbed of the Best Picture Academy Award. Unlike that film, however, The Social Reckoning opened to mediocre reviews and disappointing box-office returns.

It currently holds a 54% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “An urgent warning that feels like it’s arriving a little too late, Aaron Sorkin’s spiritual sequel to one of his crowning achievements is a worthwhile critique of social media’s omnipresence that nonetheless pales in comparison to its predecessor.” The movie revolves around a Facebook whistleblower and an investigative reporter, played by Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White, who team up to expose the internal workings of the tech company overseen by Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jeremy Strong. Zuckerberg was played by Jesse Eisenberg in an Oscar-nominated performance in the first film.
