Best known for his role in one of the most acclaimed TV dramas of all time, Mad Men, Jon Hamm has quietly become a force to be reckoned with in the TV world. Hamm shone in the first season of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, but he departed the show at the end of Season 1 — news broke not long ago that Michael Kelly (Lioness, The Penguin) will serve as his replacement in Season 3, which is expected to arrive on streaming in 2027. Hamm has also found himself in the leading role in one of Apple TV’s breakout shows from the last few years, Your Friends and Neighbors, which was written and created for TV by Jonathan Tropper. If Tropper’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s also the scribe of Shawn Levy’s new Star Wars movie, Starfighter.
Before Your Friends and Neighbors Season 3 debuts on Apple TV next year, Hamm has snagged another starring role in the legal thriller taking over TV right now, American Hostage. The show is perfect for fans missing The Lincoln Lawyer who need a legal thriller fix before Michael Connelly’s hit series returns in 2027 for its final season. American Hostage premiered with two episodes on MGM+ back on September 20, and new episodes are set to be released every week until the Season 1 finale on November 1. Before American Hostage Episode 5 premieres on October 11, Collider is happy to partner with MGM+ to exclusively preview a new sneak peek at the episode, spotlighting the dynamic performances of Giovanni Ribisi and Kristoffer Polaha.
Four action series. One of them is built around exactly the way you handle pressure, people, and a room that has just gone very quiet. Here is where you would survive the trilogy, and probably headline it.
You are precision with a grudge. You don’t posture, you don’t escalate, and you don’t warn anybody twice. That is exactly why the people who know you are so careful never to be the reason you start.
You understand the thing the whole franchise is secretly about: the cars are spectacular, but the crew is the point. You collect people, you keep them, and you’d drive through a building for any one of them.
You over-prepare and then take the dangerous part yourself anyway. It looks like control, but it’s really responsibility. You have never worked out how to ask somebody else to carry the risk.
You are not the most trained person in the building, the best equipped, or the one anybody would have picked. You are simply the one still standing at the end, which turns out to be the only qualification that matters.
In addition to Jon Hamm, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kristoffer Polaha, American Hostage also stars William Jackson Harper as Ben Hairston, Mireille Enos as Barbara Heckman, Mark McKinney as Chief Gallagher, and Kat Cunning as Ibby Hall. The show was written and created for TV by Shawn Ryan, who has also worked on other notable shows including The Shield (starring Walton Goggins) and The Night Agent (starring Gabriel Basso). MGM+’s official synopsis of American Hostage reads as follows:
“Based on the acclaimed first season of the scripted podcast of the same name, American Hostage is a psychological thriller set in the 1970s inspired by the harrowing true story of Fred Heckman, a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter who is thrust into the middle of a life-or-death crisis when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on his popular radio news program.”
Check out new episodes of American Hostage every week on MGM+ and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Jon Hamm’s future projects.
