As we wait for ***The Rookie ***Season 9, it’s time to revisit one of the most important episodes for main character Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). The Rookie established Tim from the outset as a strict and disciplinarian training officer at the Mid-Wilshire Division. As the show progressed, more details of Tim’s backstory were fleshed out, including the revelation of his estranged wife and his tumultuous upbringing. However, the best episode, where Winter got to stretch his acting muscles and perfectly personify the character, came in this very special Season 4 episode.

During Season 4, it’s revealed that Tim’s father, Tom Bradford (James Remar), is dying from cancer and in hospice care. It’s also disclosed that Tom was an alcoholic and abusive father to Tim and his sister, Gennifer Bradford (Peyton List). Some long-buried secrets become unearthed in Season 4, Episode 9, “Breakdown.” While Gennifer and Tim are renovating and preparing to sell their childhood home, Tim discovers a gun hidden in the walls. The gun is later connected to the murder of an old family friend of the Bradfords, Frank Ochoa.

Your answers have pointed to one fictional hospital above all others. This is the ward your instincts, your temperament, and your particular brand of dysfunction were built for.

You are built for the most unsparing version of emergency medicine television has ever shown — one that puts you inside a single fifteen-hour shift and doesn’t let you look away.

You are the person who keeps the whole floor running — not the most brilliant in the room, but possibly the most essential.

You came to medicine with your whole self — your ambition, your emotions, your relationships, your history — and you have never quite managed to leave any of it at the door.

You are drawn to the problem above everything else — the symptom that doesn’t fit, the diagnosis hiding underneath the obvious one.

You understand that medicine is tragic and absurd in almost equal measure — and that the only sane response is to hold both of those things at the same time.

The case brings some depressing memories back to light, as Tim knew in his youth that his father was having an affair with Frank’s wife, Monica, giving Tom a potential motive to murder Frank. Tim and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) continue the investigation, and Tim assumes that Monica is protecting Tom as the perpetrator of her husband’s murder. Later, Tim confronts his father about the crime. It’s an intense scene, and in an exceptional performance, Eric Winter is no longer the austere Officer Bradford, as viewers recognize the young boy who was subjected to horrendous abuse by his monstrous father.
