Hot off an Oscar nomination for his lead performance in Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon, Ethan Hawke headlined a critically acclaimed neo-noir series that earned him an Independent Spirit nod. The show in question is all set to return with a second season this month. Hawke recently starred alongside Russell Crowe in the well-received Western drama The Weight, and has been balancing out his arthouse work with tentpoles such as Black Phone 2 and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Hawke has also brought his exceptional taste to the small screen; in addition to his returning neo-noir comedy series for FX, he starred in Showtime’s Western limited series The Good Lord Bird.

Hawke’s neo-noir show, which premiered on FX in 2025, was created by Reservation Dogs’ Sterlin Harjo. Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the series also features Keith David, along with a star-studded supporting cast including Kyle MacLachlan, Macon Blair, Tim Blake Nelson, Tracy Letts, and Peter Dinklage. The eight-episode first season ran from September to October 2025 and scored near-unanimous praise from critics and audiences. It now holds a “Certified Fresh” 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, putting it in the same category as genre series such as Silo, Widow’s Bay, and Slow Horses.
