Last year, Crunchyroll announced “Crunchyroll Anime Nights,” bringing anime titles to theaters for a limited time. The first anime to join the program was Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to Be Loved, and since then, more titles have made their way to the big screen. Recently, Crunchyroll announced its next title for Crunchyroll Anime Nights, and it’s an exciting one: it was one of the biggest anime shows of 2016 and was produced by one of the biggest anime studios to date.
Yuri!!! on Ice was an original sports anime about figure skating, produced by MAPPA, known for Chainsaw Man and Attack on Titan Season 4. The show follows Yuri Katsuki (Jessie James Grelle/Toshiyuki Toyonaga), a Japanese figure skater who is offered coaching by Russian figure skating champion Victor Nikiforov (Jerry Jewell/Junichi Suwabe) after Victor sees Yuri imitate his routine online. Yuri!!! on Ice ran for one season and consists of 12 episodes. Since its release, it has been widely praised, including by professional figure skaters, to the point that Japanese figure skating duo Miu Suzaki and Ryuichi Kihara performed one of the show’s songs during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Crunchyroll has announced that, for one night only in the U.S. and Canada, Yuri!!! on Ice will be shown in select theaters on October 19 at 7:00 PM local time to celebrate the anime’s 10th anniversary. During this special screening, the first five episodes will be shown, and tickets are already available.
Four of the largest communities on the planet, and four completely different reasons to belong to one. Here is yours, what it would give you, and the argument you would be having within a week.
You belong to the fandom that is really about comfort. Hogwarts works on people because it is a place rather than a plot, and the pull is not the wizard war so much as the corridors, the food, the weather and the sense that somebody is expecting
You belong to the deepest fandom on this list, the one where somebody has always read further than you and is quietly delighted to say so. Middle-earth rewards patience more than any other world in popular culture.
You belong to the loudest and largest tent of the four, the one where three generations are all watching the same thing and none of them agree about any of it. That disagreement is not a flaw in this fandom, it is the main activity.
You belong to the thinking fandom, the one that turns up for the argument rather than the explosion. Trek has always been a series of ethical problems in space, and the people who love it love being asked what they would have done.
Since the Yuri!!! on Ice franchise has ended, with no plans for a movie or second season, other titles could satisfy that itch if you want more stories like it. The first is Heated Rivalry. Based on Rachel Reid’s Game Changers book series, the show follows two professional hockey players who keep their romantic relationship a secret while playing on rival teams. The series became a huge success when it premiered in late 2025, and a second season has been greenlit.
But if you want something more anime-related, then Free! would be another highly recommended choice. Released in 2013, the show follows a high school swimming team in the fictional town of Iwatobi after learning that one of their childhood friends has returned to Japan. While it has no romance subplot, it features the sports rivalry fans enjoyed in Yuri!!! on Ice, as well as a slice-of-life story that follows these characters as they grow from high school students and continue pursuing their passions after entering university.
Yuri!!! on Ice is streaming on Crunchyroll. Follow Collider for more updates.
