Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series was always going to be a massive undertaking for the Prime Video show’s creators, which made its cancellation after three seasons disappointing but not all that surprising. Spanning 14 main novels, Jordan’s saga unfolds across an enormous world filled with competing kingdoms, ancient prophecies, political intrigue, powerful channelers, and a vast ensemble whose individual stories gradually converge around the battle against the Dark One.

The television adaptation only had time to explore a fraction of that mythology before its premature ending, leaving Rand al’Thor, Moiraine, Egwene, Mat, Perrin, and countless other characters with journeys that were nowhere near complete. For viewers who discovered the world through the show, that abrupt conclusion made the loss especially frustrating.

Fortunately, The Wheel of Time is already preparing another major return in 2027, giving fans left hanging by the television series a new way to revisit its sprawling conflict and find some much-needed closure.

For fans still disappointed by the television show’s cancellation, The Wheel of Time will officially return in 2027 through War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, the first licensed board game adaptation of Robert Jordan’s fantasy saga. Developed by Dire Wolf, the strategy game takes on a far larger stretch of the story than Amazon’s series ever reached, incorporating material from all 14 main novels.

War of the Dragon effectively places the fate of Jordan’s world in players’ hands. Its story begins around the events of The Shadow Rising, following the fall of the Stone of Tear, before allowing the conflict between the Light and Shadow to develop toward Tarmon Gai’don, or the Last Battle. Players control major characters, armies, and territories while navigating story events, political maneuvering, and shifting circumstances inspired by the books. The game uses mechanics including area control, action selection, and tableau building to translate the enormous fantasy saga into a tabletop strategy experience.

That scope makes the 2027 release particularly notable after the TV adaptation ended so early with Jordan’s narrative. War of the Dragon draws from the complete series, including the eventual Last Battle. Dire Wolf currently expects U.S. Kickstarter fulfillment during the first half of 2027, with international fulfillment following afterward. The Dragon Reborn Edition is also planned for retail release through local game stores and international partners in 2027.
