It’s hard to remember a better year for horror than 2026. Although we are still only nine months in, the devil’s favorite genre has been blessed with a selection of decade-defining entries. This includes A24’s Backrooms, which transformed a viral internet creepypasta into a box office success that propelled 20-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons to record-breaking fame. But the standout horror hit of the year, and arguably the greatest horror success story ever, is Curry Barker’s breakout masterpiece, Obsession, which turned a sub-$1 million budget into over $500 million at the box office.

Not only a commercial smash hit, but *Obsession *also blew away critics, earning universal praise. The film is likely to earn Academy recognition early next year, with many touting Inde Navarrette’s star-making turn for Best Actress at the Oscars, a performance Collider’s Hannah Hunt called “one of the year’s best”in her review. But for all this horror greatness in 2026, this superb year was set up neatly by an early release that could be called 2026’s most underrated horror film.

The film in question is Send Help, which marked the long-awaited return to horror for the iconic*** Evil Dead*** director Sam Raimi after 17 years. This biting survival horror satire stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien as co-workers stranded on an island, as a Triangle of Sadness-esque plot explodes into gory greatness. Described as “a hell of a lot of fun with two dynamite performances” in Aidan Kelley’s official review, this gem has maintained its popularity since making its streaming debut, and has now surpassed the 100-day mark on the Hulu charts in the U.S.

Four franchises, four completely different ways of getting underneath your skin. This is the one built out of your particular fear, why it works so well on you, and what it would leave behind.

Your nightmare does not wait outside the door. It waits for you to close your eyes, which you are going to have to do eventually, because nobody has ever won that particular argument.

Your nightmare is not really the doll. It is the face of the person you tell, and the way they decide, very kindly, that you have imagined all of it.

Your nightmare has your number, knows your name, and has almost certainly been inside your house before. The worst part is that you already know them.

Your nightmare is not really about you. It is about the people asleep down the hall, and the feeling that whatever is here is not interested in leaving.
