Hannah has been writing about horror, sci-fi, and all things nerdy since 2021. At Collider, she covers news and conducts interviews, along with contributing features that dive deep into genre storytelling and why it works. If there’s something lurking in the shadows, she’s probably already writing about it if she’s not too busy watching a tape from her VHS collection.
Marvel’s Wolverine has been placed under an especially unforgiving microscope since its release, with players examining everything from its story and combat to the smallest details hidden throughout Insomniac Games’ latest Marvel world. One particularly bizarre bathroom sign has now become the subject of a viral accusation, but the studio says players have the explanation entirely wrong.
The sign features several distorted male figures seemingly overlapping one another, creating the kind of visual oddity that has increasingly led audiences to suspect generative AI. A TikTok highlighting the asset has accumulated more than 700,000 views, while an X post questioning whether Insomniac used AI in its reported $300 million game has been viewed more than 452,000 times.
Insomniac’s Director of Community and Marketing, James Stevenson, has now responded directly to the accusation. Stevenson explained that the unusual appearance is caused by a technical problem and confirmed that the studio is already preparing a correction, writing:
“No. This is a UV map bug and we have a fix coming. There are no AI generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine.”
Four worlds and four completely different ideas of what a good life looks like. This is where you belong, what it would ask of you, and what you would get back in
You belong somewhere old enough that the mountains have names and somebody can still tell you who gave them. Middle-earth is for people who think the right thing is worth doing even when it will not be finished in their lifetime.
You want the sea, a crew, and absolutely nobody telling you where you are allowed to go. The Grand Line is the world for people whose main ambition in life is finding out what is over there.
You would rather be feared and useful than liked and useless. The Continent is a world where the monsters are the straightforward part of the job and the people are where it all gets complicated.
You want the myths to be real and loose in the actual world, and you want to find out at about thirteen that you were never anywhere near as ordinary as everybody kept telling you.
A UV map determines how a two-dimensional texture is placed across the surface of a three-dimensional model, meaning an error can stretch, duplicate, or distort an otherwise ordinary image. That would explain why the figures on the sign appear to collide with one another, as well as why the exact distortion changes when the asset is viewed from different angles. More significantly, Stevenson did not limit his denial to this particular bathroom sign. His statement confirms that there are no AI-generated assets anywhere in Marvel’s Wolverine, shutting down broader speculation about Insomniac’s development process while identifying the viral example as a conventional visual bug.
Marvel’s Wolverine has already faced an intense online response since launching, including criticism of its quick-time events, linear sequences, and interpretation of established X-Men characters. None of that attention has prevented the game from reportedly becoming one of PlayStation 5’s strongest-selling releases of 2026 and receiving some strong reviews, and this latest controversy appears to be considerably less sinister than some players believed. The bathroom sign may look deeply strange, but Insomniac’s explanation is straightforward: It is broken, not generated.
Marvel’s Wolverine was released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
