The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting ready to finish one of its biggest trilogies.
The Multiverse Saga came with a big change when Phase 4 kicked off, as the launch of Disney+ brought numerous Marvel TV shows to life, allowing established and new characters to be explored. While WandaVision didn’t return for season 2, it instead launched a little franchise for the MCU, leading to the Agatha All Along spinoff.
The next installment in the WandaVision trilogy is a month away from arriving, as Paul Bettany will headline the VisionQuest offshoot, which will mark the end of an era for Marvel Studios. While Terry Matalas serves as showrunner, Jac Schaeffer, who created the two previous shows, was initially the one to develop the 2026 drama.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bettany shared why she stepped away for “personal reasons,” stating, “I felt like the rug had been pulled from under my feet. I love her very much and we made a lovely thing together. I had been waiting and looking forward to having my turn with Jac. And then 24 hours later, I was at a lunch with Terry, because that’s the speed at which Marvel move.”
Even though she is still maintaining her executive producer credit on the Phase 6 project, Schaeffer began developing the spinoff in October 2022. However, Variety stated in September 2024 that a reason why Matalas was hired as the new showrunner was due to her having a scheduling conflict, with the trade stating that “Schaeffer’s attention turned to running a separate “WandaVision” spinoff, “Agatha All Along” with Kathryn Hahn.”
Outside of Daredevil: Born Again season 3, which is set to premiere in March 2027, VisionQuest is the last new Disney+ Original for Marvel Studios in The Multiverse Saga. As they are currently working on finishing Phase 6 of the MCU timeline with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, there are also no other films besides the two team-up ensembles.
While there have been reports about Marvel Television scaling down, insiders close to Puck shared in August that there are, in fact, new original live-action MCU shows in development for Disney+. As of writing, Disney and Marvel have yet to confirm or announce upcoming series from the beloved superhero franchise on the streaming platform.
As the VisionQuest show will explore Bettany’s long-time MCU hero adjusting to being alive again, James Spader will reprise his role as Ultron, including showing up in human form, with the story taking place in Vision’s mind. Other established A.I. characters in the franchise will also show up, while Ruaridh Mollica is playing Tommy Maximoff, a.k.a. Speed, after his brother Billy was able to get his soul placed in Thomas Shepherd.
Despite her death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there have been theories that Elizabeth Olsen is making a comeback as Scarlet Witch in the MCU drama. However, Matalas shut down the idea of Wanda popping up in VisionQuest, as he told GamesRadar the following: “There’s a moment late in the season that we were running towards, but we didn’t know exactly how we would get there. Paul had an amazing idea for the kind of scene it should be. Who he is within that particular scene is kind of amazing, and that we were able to pull that off. I want to make sure that people don’t think I’m teasing Wanda, because I’m not teasing Wanda.”
WandaVision and Agatha All Along are streaming on Disney+, while VisionQuest is set to premiere on October 14.
