Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg spent much of the 2010s developing one of Hollywood’s more prolific actor-director partnerships. Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day all leaned into grounded stories of people operating under extreme pressure. Their fourth collaboration decided to dispense with the true stories and simply have Wahlberg start shooting people. The result was Mile 22, a nasty, hyperactive action thriller with shades of Sicario and the close-quarters carnage of The Raid. And the whole thing is over in just 94 minutes.
Wahlberg stars as James Silva, an operative of the CIA’s most highly-prized and least-understood unit. Aided by a top-secret tactical command team, Silva must retrieve and transport an asset who holds life-threatening information to Mile 22 for extraction before the enemy closes in. When police officer Li Noor offers intelligence concerning missing radioactive material in exchange for safe passage out of the country, Silva and his team are tasked with transporting him 22 miles to an extraction aircraft, but as you’d expect, virtually everyone with a gun wants to make sure they don’t get there.
Mile 22 stars Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead) as Alice Kerr, Iko Uwais (The Raid) as Li Noor, John Malkovich (Con Air) as James Bishop, Ronda Rousey (Furious 7) as Sam Snow, Carlo Alban (Prison Break) as William Douglas III, Natasha Goubskaya (The Bourne Supremacy) as Vera Kuragina and CL (My Little Pony: The Movie) as Queen.

Commercially, the film managed to do some respectable business, but ultimately it never ended up becoming the franchise starter it was clearly hoped to be. It was produced for a mysterious fee of between $35 million and $60 million, according to reports. Either way, it wasn’t a good return as Mile 22 finished its theatrical run with $66.3 million worldwide. Critical response was also less than enthusiastic and the movie sits at 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score is higher at 44%.
The biggest attraction for audiences and critics is Uwais, because if anyone has seen The Raid, then you’ll know exactly what happens when you put him in a confined space with a group of armed men, and Mile 22 wisely gives him plenty of opportunities to demonstrate it. It looks like it hurts, and that’s why we can’t get enough of it.
