Andrew Garfield’s Secret Robin Hood Movie Officially Premieres in 2 Weeks

This isn’t like M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, which was revealed in its final moments to be a secret sequel to his classic superhero movie Unbreakable. Nor is this like Adam Wingard’s 2016 horror movie that was produced and marketed under the title The Woods, before being revealed as a secret Blair Witch sequel days ahead of its release. On both those occasions, the idea of withholding information was key to the marketing strategies. This time around, however, there’s a distinctly different flavor to how an upcoming movie directed by one Oscar nominee and headlined by another is being promoted. But what is a studio left to do when the very IP that probably got the project green-lit becomes box-office poison in real time?

This week, new marketing materials for the period action movie The Uprising identified it, instead, as The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood. Directed by Paul Greengrass and featuring Andrew Garfield in the lead role, the movie was initially believed to be a dramatization of a real-life historical event: the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. But clearly, this pitch wasn’t as appealing as the studio believed it would be. Now, Focus Features’ official logline underlines the project’s Robin Hood connections, even though it seemed like they were downplaying this notion earlier because of how poorly Robin Hood movies have performed in the last few years. Here’s the studio’s updated synopsis: “Andrew Garfield stars as the leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. Set against the true events of the Uprising that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice.”
