A cinematic obsessive with the filmic palate of a starving raccoon, Rob London will watch pretty much anything once. Over 40 years since their creation, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are proving to be as long-lived as their reptilian progenitors. Toy company Mondo has recently had success translating the Turtles into gorgeous 1/6 scale action figures, and now it’s the turn of their greatest enemy. Collider is proud to exclusively reveal Mondo’s new 1/6 scale Shredder action figure. Going back to their first appearance in the black-and-white comic book Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, the TMNT have been menaced by the merciless Shredder, alias Oroku Saki, the masked leader of the Foot ninja clan. The Shredder has been present in nearly every incarnation of the franchise, across comics, cartoons, and movies, whether he’s the gang leader of the original live-action films or the secret alien invader of the 2003 animated series. He’s about to return to the big screen as the villain of next year’s sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Mondo’s new 1/6 scale Shredder may be the baddest incarnation of them all: with a hybrid design incorporating elements of his many incarnations, he’s ready to slice and dice the Turtles. The figure comes with removable armor and fabric costume pieces, an arsenal of weapons, three interchangeable heads and five interchangeable pairs of hands, a removable helmet, and a communicator device with a holographic Krang; the package will also include an exclusive MondoVerse comic story. He’ll retail for a suggested price of $265 USD.
Collider had the chance to talk to Mondo creative director Peter Santa-Maria about making this incarnation of the Shredder. He discussed what incarnations of the villain were incorporated into this ultimate version of the villain. “We really wanted to see the version of Shredder we know and love from the animated series and video games designed as if he were appearing in a ’90s live-action film,” said Santa-Maria. “The purple, grey, and chrome palette is our touchstone to those, but we also wanted to make sure the metal armor felt like it could’ve been forged from Dimension X and the leather parts felt as if they were from Shredder’s past!” There’s a story behind the figure; this is a Shredder who’s seen some action and has now linked up with forces beyond his ken to exact his final revenge on his sewer-dwelling archenemies. His gear reflects a union of ancient ninja weaponry with alien technology:
Every part of this design needed to make narrative sense based on the world we are building for these figures. This is Shredder after failing to defeat the Turtles and uniting with Krang’s army like we saw him in the ’80s cartoons. His weaponry is intricately sculpted to reflect the fact that they could come from his historical collection, but he also has a familiar communicator with a holographic projection of Krang. These aspects symbolize a Shredder who is balancing his past conquests with his future potential.
He also cited the specific influences on the figure, including *TMNT *creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, legendary puppeteer Jim Henson, and animator Peter Chung. Santa-Maria continued, saying, “We hope it’s abundantly clear that we are longtime fans ourselves and this is our love letter to people like us! We are trying to bring forth what we all have dreamt of: **a real-life interpretation of all the wild and whimsical characters and designs from the broader TMNT world! **We are pulling inspiration from Eastman, Laird, Henson, and Chung, just to name a few! Ben Bishop, who was responsible for the package design and art of the new figure, discussed his personal connection to the Shredder and how the pose on the package pays homage to the classic (but maybe not so menacing) Playmates TMNT action figures of the past.
“There’s nobody else like Shredder. He is the OG baddie, without a doubt. Top that off with the samurai style helmet and you have a very formidable foe. I love when we can do a big flowing cape design to give him that regal look and respect he also demands. For this figure we also gave him that shirtless swole look, straight out of an 80’s movie, but also a nice nod to the weird, curled over, corn on the cob looking Shredder we got from Playmates in the original toy line we all know and loved. Pure nostalgic magic for the now 40 something year old kid who’s still collecting toys and playing pretend — like myself.”
Bishop also discussed the specific elements and configuration of the Shredder figure he wanted to capture on the packaging art, and how he experimented with multiple poses before going with the simplest, most effective solution. “I definitely wanted to show him all armored up, and with the cape. There would be plenty of shirtless Shredder in the short comic we made to go along with it,” Bishop laughed. “I tried out all sorts of different poses or action shots for the front art, but ultimately, we thought his stature and presence spoke for itself, and it was best to just show him walking right at you — oozing aura — being a total badass without having to do much at all. Just look at him.”
Bishop revealed why the packaging is so important for action figures: it not only catches the eye before the collector can get their hands on the figure, but it tells a story about the character. And you don’t have to throw it away after you liberate the figure from its cardboard prison:
“Well, it’s of course the first thing they see. You want it to be exciting, but also get their gears moving and their mind making up a story or scenario based on that one image. That’s what illustration is all about, telling a story. I can’t really draw anything without having a story behind it. I know that must have been why this line is so fun for the MONDO crew — they get to make it up. They get to pretend and play with their toys while they do it. What’s really cool is they’re telling the story WHILE making the toys at the same time. So that was great to be a part of. My ultimate hope is that the packaging is so good, the fans can’t throw it out, and it becomes part of their display. That’s another thing we did with the box art that’s really cool, is you get an insert of JUST the background so you can put it behind your Shredder figure and bring the packaging art to life on your shelf.”
His final word on the figure expressed his love for the character and figure…and also teased the iconic pair of *TMNT *villains who might be next on Mondo’s drawing board. “Shredder is actually really hard to draw — especially MONDO Shredder… Thanks for that INSANELY complex and detailed design guys! It looks great,” said Bishop. “I’m honored to be a part of it — and I want that BEBOP & ROCKSTEADY job too… Please.”
