J.J. Abrams’ New Sci-Fi Thriller Officially Crosses Major Box Office Milestone in Opening Weekend

Two dinosaur movies butted heads at the box office this weekend, grossing similar amounts despite being targeted at different demographics. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, the third installment in the quietly successful animated franchise, overperformed with a $20 million haul in its domestic debut. The movie comes three years after Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which made $22 million in its domestic debut and concluded its theatrical run with more than $200 million worldwide against a reported budget of $30 million. The franchise began with Paw Patrol: The Movie, which grossed $13 million in its domestic debut and more than $150 million worldwide in 2021. The third installment cost a reported $40 million to produce, and holds an 81% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Coincidentally, the other dinosaur movie of the week is sitting at a similar score on Rotten Tomatoes, although it cost more than twice as much. The movie in question is the latest in a streak of underperformers released by Warner Bros. this year, following an exceptional 2025 that saw seven of the studio’s movies gross more than $40 million in their domestic debuts. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. saw Supergirl and The Bride! deliver uninspired results, with similarly risky titles such as Practical Magic 2, Clayface, and Digger lined up. But the studio has Dune: Part Three to look forward to later this year.
