The X-Men rarely get much time to relax. Between Sentinels, mutant-hating politicians, time travel, and whatever new existential threat happens to be knocking on the mansion’s door that week, there is usually another disaster waiting before anyone can enjoy a day off. X-Men ‘97 Season 2 hasn’t exactly made life easier for Marvel’s mutants, but it has found room between those larger conflicts to spend more time with characters who weren’t always at the center of the original animated series.

Bishop (Isaac Robinson-Smith) has particularly benefited from that extra attention. After becoming an important part of the team in Season 1, the time-traveling mutant has gotten considerably more room to establish who he is when he isn’t trying to prevent another catastrophic future. Polaris, aka Lorna Dane, and Havok, aka Alex Summers, have also become increasingly important as X-Men ‘97 expands beyond the core roster inherited from X-Men: The Animated Series. With Season 3 already on the horizon, those relationships give the series plenty to explore once the X-Men survive their latest crisis. One of them, however, might be getting considerably more complicated.

Speaking with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, Robinson-Smith addressed the increasingly flirtatious dynamic between Bishop and Polaris. When asked directly what was happening between the two mutants, Robinson-Smith didn’t exactly discourage viewers from reading something romantic into their interactions. “The vibe is good. I can’t say very much, but keep watching. […] I’m glad you like that. It’s fun,” he said.

The finale makes those vibes considerably harder to ignore. Bishop and Lorna eventually get a rare moment alone together with an adorable picnic, something Robinson-Smith was particularly excited to discuss. “Oh, I know. Right? How cute is that?” Robinson-Smith said of the scene, adding that he had “a really good time recording those scenes,” as a sweet development for a character who has spent so much of X-Men ‘97 dealing with considerably less romantic problems. Bishop is usually the guy arriving from a dystopian future with terrible news, and Robinson-Smith has enjoyed finally getting the opportunity to explore what else is going on underneath all of that.

“I do like, you know, the romantic, like softer side of Bishop. It’s a fun thing to see. It’s a fun place to explore and to just exist in because everyone’s three-dimensional,” he told Lovitt. Robinson-Smith joked that Bishop doesn’t have to permanently exist in his “‘time for an exorcism, punks’ kind of zone,” pointing out that the character can have a life beyond the constant action surrounding the X-Men. “There’s all that action, there’s all that stuff going on, but then there’s another side, and I like that we get to see more of that,” he continued. “So it’s been really fun.”

Of course, Lorna’s love life comes with a rather large Summers-shaped complication. Polaris and Havok have one of Marvel Comics’ longest-running mutant romances, and X-Men ‘97 now has the pieces in place to make that relationship considerably messier if Bishop and Lorna’s connection continues into Season 3. For now, Robinson-Smith is being careful not to confirm exactly where that picnic is leading. The X-Men ‘97 finale certainly isn’t being subtle about giving viewers something to speculate about, though.
