Released for the first time back in 2001,* **Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, ***otherwise known as *Alone in the Dark 4, *is a survival horror video game from developer Darkworks. Serving as the fourth installment, as well as the first reboot in the Alone in the Dark franchise, it launched on PC, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and the Game Boy Color and received positive reviews from the onset.

Although the late 90s and early 00s were a revolutionary time for survival horror titles, with the Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises pulling in legions of fans, *Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare *still managed to stand amongst the greats, and is remembered fondly to this day, especially thanks to its recent entry.

However, with a lack of modern-day remake, fans are having to rely on the old-school classic with those graphics we all remember fondly. That being said, it is not all doom and gloom, as *Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare *has now made its way to the PlayStation Plus library.

Available to download and play for PlayStation Plus Premium members, this 2001 hit is the perfect way to celebrate the upcoming spooky months, and who does not love a bit of nostalgia? However, if you are of the younger generation, and have missed out on this survival horror entry, the official synopsis reads as follows:

Return to Shadow Island in this emulation of the classic PS® survival horror, playable on PS5® for the first time.

From the moment Edward Carnby and Aline Cedrac set foot on Shadow Island, they are stalked by mysterious, evil creatures intent on thwarting their quest to find the three ancient tablets that could hold the key to an otherworldly power. Danger lurks at every corner – do you have what it takes to fight back evil once and for all?

With the ability to choose between two different protagonists, gameplay is reminiscent of others of this time, especially when there is both a male and female main character. Whilst Carnby is more combat focused, fighting monsters using weapons, Aline is busy solving puzzles. Over time, the two eventually meet, with their gameplay eventually emerging.

Considered to be revolutionary for its time, especially in the survival horror genre, *Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare *has earned its spot as one of the best original horror games and now, it is available to play for absolutely free for the first time on PlayStation 5.
