In a year dominated by sci-fi titles, Rebecca Ferguson’s next release is a children’s fantasy film. Ferguson began the year with the poorly received “screen-life” movie Mercy, which also featured Chris Pratt. Mercy was panned by critics, and it fell short of its reported $60 million budget at the worldwide box office. Ferguson then reprised her role in the beloved Apple TV sci-fi series Silo, which returned with an acclaimed third season this year. In December, she’ll return as Lady Jessica in Denis Villeneuve’s hotly anticipated Dune: Part Three, which is all but guaranteed to garner critical and commercial success. But first, Ferguson will appear in an upcoming fantasy movie that has already delivered a solid box-office run in the United Kingdom.
In fact, the new movie arrives amid talks of a sequel. The film is based on a series of children’s novels written by Enid Blyton; it also features Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Nonso Anozie, Nicola Coughlan, and Jessica Gunning — talk about an eclectic cast. The movie was released theatrically in the United Kingdom in March, when it grossed around $30 million. It arrives in North America on the back of excellent reviews, and a high bar set by the Paddington movies. That series, which includes three films so far, has grossed a combined total of more than $800 million at the box office, despite a limited contribution from North America.
