***Star Wars ***actor John Boyega wants his character to train under one of the prequel trilogy’s best Jedis.
During an appearance at Rebel Scum Con 2026, Boyega revealed that he would like Finn to receive Jedi training from Mace Windu, the fan-favorite Jedi Master played by Samuel L. Jackson in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The proposal would give Finn a mentor other than Rey (Daisy Ridley) while also allowing the Star Wars franchise to answer one of its biggest mysteries, whether Mace actually survived the events of Revenge of the Sith.
Boyega’s statement comes years after the sequel trilogy implied that Finn had a deeper connection to the Force than viewers initially believed. Although* Star Wars: The Force Awakens* did not explicitly establish him as Force-sensitive, Finn briefly wielded Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber and was originally supposed to have a larger role.
That specific element became more apparent in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Finn consistently proved that he had the ability to sense events through the Force. The movie also included a running subplot where he attempted to tell Rey something important but was never able to finish the conversation.
The actor has previously discussed how Finn’s original character arc changed as the sequel trilogy developed. A few years ago, he explained that The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams had bigger plans for Finn. However, different filmmakers made creative decisions that ended up affecting his character’s journey. But when Abrams returned to direct The Rise of Skywalker, certain elements were brought back into the story.
Pairing Finn with Mace would nevertheless require serious changes to Star Wars canon. Mace was last seen in* Revenge of the Sith* after Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) chopped off his hand during his battle with Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Palpatine struck the Jedi Master with Force lightning and sent him crashing through a window above Coruscant. While it is very heavily implied that he died, the film never actually revealed his fate on screen, although that could arguably be due to not wanting to traumatize a younger audience.
However, Jackson himself has stated that Mace could be alive, which was what sparked so much debate over the years about the character. The actor has stated that others have survived severe injuries and falls. So, falling out a window and not seeing a body doesn’t necessarily mean that he is deceased. He has also expressed interest in reprising the role in future ***Star Wars ***projects.
