HBO has unleashed several massive shows this year, including a pair of Game of Thrones spin-offs that have both been renewed for new seasons. The first Game of Thrones show to capture the hearts of fans everywhere was A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which earned a knockout score of 94% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Some fans criticized the show for its slower pace and smaller scale, which is not what the franchise has delivered in the past, especially with its other spin-off, House of the Dragon. In addition to putting out critically acclaimed dramas like Rooster (starring Steve Carell) and DTF St. Louis (starring David Harbour), HBO also released the sophomore season of its smash hit medical drama, The Pitt. However, HBO’s most ambitious show of 2026 is still on the horizon.
Set to continue the story of James Gunn’s DCU in less than two weeks is Lanterns, which premieres on HBO Max on August 16. Starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Lanterns is connected to the DCU through Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who will appear in the show after starring in both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. Lanterns was written and created for TV by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof, with** Vanessa Baden**, Justin Britt-Gibson, Christopher Cantwell, and Breannah Gibson providing additional script material for episodes. The show is already being positioned as DC’s answer to True Detective, and after trailers have pulled millions of views online, it’s safe to say it’s one of the biggest launches of the year for HBO Max. Laura Linney and Garret Dillahunt have also been tapped for key roles in Lanterns.
Your answers point to the iconic sci-fi hero who shares your instincts, your values, and your particular way of facing the impossible.
You carry a weight most people would crumble under — the knowledge of what you’re capable of, and the burden of what you might have to become.
You lead with instinct, warmth, and an absolute refusal to accept a no-win scenario — because you’ve always believed there’s a third option nobody else has thought of yet.
You are the kind of person who holds the line when everyone else is losing faith — not because you’re fearless, but because giving up simply isn’t something you’re capable of.
You are not reckless, not grandiose, and not particularly interested in being anyone’s hero — you just refuse to stop when it matters.
You have been through fire that would break most people — and what came out the other side is something the world underestimates at its peril.
Lanterns is set mostly on Earth — a detail about the show that has been quite controversial among long-time Green Lantern fans — and it follows John Stewart as a new recruit learning under the tutelage of intergalactic legend Hal Jordan, who has been a Green Lantern for years. The two are drawn to Earth to investigate a murder in the American heartland, but they quickly become convinced that there are foreign elements at play. It’s already been confirmed that Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as John Stewart in the 2027 DCU Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
Check out Lanterns when it premieres on HBO Max on Sunday, August 16, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the series.
