With several upcoming new releases in the Lord of the Rings franchise, fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. While some projects, such as Andy Serkis’s The Hunt for Gollum and Stephen Colbert’s Shadows of the Past, have split the fanbase right down the middle and the ongoing Rings of Power Amazon series has sparked quite a bit of backlash, projects such as Warhorse’s open-world RPG have garnered overwhelming support.
Still, with a growing slate of new releases on the way, Tolkien’s Middle-Earth is as alive as it has ever been, and despite criticisms over the direction some of these projects will take, each one offers longtime fans and newcomers alike a fresh perspective into the iconic fantasy universe.
Add to this extensive lineup of new* Lord of the Rings *releases the upcoming expansion to one of the franchise’s most acclaimed RPGs, The One Ring, which is officially launching a trove of new content in September 2026 (via Backerkit).

Free League’s award-winning tabletop RPG, *The One Ring, *is officially set to get three huge new releases in September via a new crowdfunding campaign announced at this year’s Gen Con event taking place this weekend. According to the official press release from Free League, the triple offering includes the following new releases:
The White Tower & the Hall of Gold is a huge new expansion sending players to Gondor and Rohan, while Creatures Strange and Fowl is an intricately detailed new bestiary for the RPG that *“gathers a host of adversaries drawn from the shadows of the Third Age.” *Both components will also be receiving 5E counterparts for *The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying *titled Realms of the South and Of Orcs and Evil Things, respectively.
If you haven’t had a chance to play The One Ring RPG yet, it’s a tabletop RPG designed to capture the spirit of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth set during the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players create original heroes who explore iconic regions, uncover ancient mysteries, and defend the Free Peoples from the Shadow.
It has become one of the most acclaimed Lord of the Rings RPGs thanks to its faithful adaptation of the source material and immersive approach to adventuring in Middle-earth, and now is the perfect time to get caught up ahead of the triple offering launch in September.
