The last few years have been relatively quiet for Ridley Scott — the sci-fi savant has not directed anything since he returned to the colosseum for Gladiator II. Even before his Gladiator legacy sequel, Scott reunited with Joaquin Phoenix for Napoleon, the critically maligned historical bomb that’s now streaming on Apple TV after a disastrous box office run. Just because Scott hasn’t been busy behind the camera as a director doesn’t mean he’s not leaving his mark on various projects as a producer via his Scott Free producing banner. Last year, Scott produced and was heavily involved in the debut season of Alien: Earth, the first TV show from the franchise he started all the way back in 1979. After his last sci-fi movie came all the way back in 2018 on Alien: Covenant, Scott is finally set to return to the genre in less than one month.
Ridley Scott makes his long-awaited return to sci-fi on August 28 with The Dog Stars, the new dystopian epic starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin. Elordi is red-hot right now after earning his first Oscar nod for Frankenstein and for starring in the final season of Euphoria, and it’s a safe bet that Scott is about to guide him to one of his best performances. The Dog Stars was previously scheduled to be released in March, but the film was delayed much earlier in the year to give the editors and post-production team time to get it up to standard for a Scott Free production. Margaret Qualley, famed for her roles like in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, has also been cast in a supporting role in The Dog Stars, along with Guy Pearce and Benedict Wong.
