2026 has already been an absolutely stacked year for gaming so far, but on top of what we’ve already gotten to enjoy for ourselves, the next few weeks are bringing even more releases from brand-new games like Beast of Reincarnation, long-awaited ports, and DLC for critically acclaimed releases. Although there aren’t as many big-budget triple-A releases hitting us in August, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of unique games that nobody is talking about enough on the horizon.
Regardless of which platform you play on or how interested you are in the avalanche of indie games arriving each week throughout August 2026, there are bound to be a few titles that you’ll want to keep your eye on during the transition between Summer and an already loaded Fall season, starting with Game Freak’s surprise action title Beast of Reincarnation.
As the biggest original release of August this year, Beast of Reincarnation is a major departure from Game Freak’s previous releases, offering a unique sci-fi fantasy RPG that already looks incredibly promising so far. Set in the far future of 4026, Beast of Reincarnation follows the story of an outcast named Emma and her dog Koo as they travel through a post-apocalyptic Japan to combat the deadly creatures and diseases plaguing the land.
Aside from how jarring it is to see such impressive visuals from Game Freak compared to Pokémon’s lackluster fidelity in recent years, it’s hard not to get excited over the great level of atmosphere and world-building on display in the studio’s latest title, which boasts a unique mix of real-time and turn-based combat with incredibly cinematic animations to enjoy when it releases on August 4 for PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.
Should Game Freak’s darker original story with Beast of Reincarnation succeed, it could be the start of a new direction for the studio moving forward, with the opportunity for more ambitious projects and sequels in the future that could even see their positive aspects bleed over into the Pokémon franchise.
Although we’re not getting any major first-party Switch titles this summer, aside from Part 1 of the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass*,* which brings new areas, furniture, outfits, and even new Pokémon to the game, there are a plethora of re-releases and third-party titles arriving on both the Switch 2 and even the original Switch.
Starting off with some incredible ports like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Lies of P, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, and most notably Elden Ring, Switch users are getting an absolutely stacked roster of re-releases to enjoy on the handheld for the very first time.
Even if you’ve already played some of the original games on other consoles when they first released, the novelty of being able to play them on the go combined with the new visual and performance enhancements in games like the Mtal Gear Solid: Master Collection and Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, adding new content to the experience, there’s plenty of reason to be excited about these long-awaited ports.
If you’re more of a fan of multiplayer games, however, Switch 2 players are also getting two hit MMOs added to the Nintendo Store this month, with the third-person base-building shooter Once Human, alongside the highly anticipated Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail on August 4 that finally brings the critically acclaimed MMO to the system after years of rumors and waiting.
While the Switch 2 might be getting the most ports out of each console, one of the most exciting re-releases of the month easily comes from the release of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, which offers a remastered version of both Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker when it releases on August 27 for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.
Having already showcased some of the impressive visual upgrades compared to the original two games, the Master Collection is easily the definitive way to experience the series from now on, not only for making the series far more accessible on a wide variety of platforms, but also fixing some of the biggset flaws with the poor performance or hardware limitations that held the series back for so long, with Metal Gear Solid 4 needed it the most.
Even though they aren’t the most ideal entries to jump into for a first-time player, it’s great to have something to look forward to if you’ve been waiting for the series to become fully remastered for your enjoyment, or revisiting as an experienced fan looking for an excuse to revisit the beloved series.
While we’ve already gone over some of the most exciting titles we’re looking forward to seeing over the next few weeks, it only scratches the surface of the massive amount of games we’re getting in August. Although most of these experiences come from smaller indie studios or solo developers, there are still some projects coming from big franchises on the horizon.
Star Wars Zero Company is one upcoming game that absolutely deserves the attention that the sci-fi franchise demands, bringing a unique decision-based tactical strategy game set during the Clone Wars era of the series on August 27, which even promises to bring back fan-favorite characters like Anakin Skywalker in their golden years.
Two acclaimed triple-A titles are also getting major expansions in the form of paid DLC with STALKER 2: Cost of Hope and Mafia: The Old Country Man of Honor, which not only offer an excuse to revisit the games, but add onto them in meaningful ways that we can’t wait to see play out when they release alongside the rest of the following games:

While it might be a little overwhelming to keep track of all these titles coming out in August, it does mean there’s a little something for everyone this month. Even with the absence of too many original triple-A titles aside from Beast of Reincarnation, with games like Mortal Shell for hardcore Action RPG fans, *The Sinking City *for survival horror, and plenty of cozy games like Capy Castaway for anyone looking to spend the rest of summer with some tailor-made games by their side.
