Star Wars' Newest Spin-Off Series Blasts Off With a Huge Season 2 Update [Exclusive]

Even after 9 main-line movies, 4 spin-off films, and a seemingly endless catalog of TV shows, the Star Wars universe continues to expand in meaningful and engaging ways. From surprisingly gritty war stories as seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars to mature espionage sagas like Andor, the diversity of storytelling within the Star Wars galaxy is truly impressive. Now, so many creative minds have had the opportunity to explore this universe, and in no Disney+ series is that more apparent than in Star Wars: Visions.

In 2021, Disney and Lucasfilm devised the brilliant idea to create a short anthology series from some of Japan’s best animators, and the result was the wildly successful and critically acclaimed Star Wars: Visions. Each season of the three-part series has expanded on the last, with Season 2 expanding the opportunity to international creators outside Japan and with Season 3 including several sequel episodes to Season 1’s best stories. However, before Season 3 even released, Disney and Lucasfilm also announced something else entirely — Star Wars: Visions would be getting its first-ever standalone spin-off series with The Ninth Jedi.

With fascinating character choices, vibrant animation, and well-written characters, turning The Ninth Jedi into its own series was a no-brainer, but is the upcoming series a limited engagement or the start of another new chapter in the *Star Wars *galaxy? To find out, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt was able to chat with directors **Kenji Kamiyama **and Shunsuke Tada and producer Hitoshi Itô about what the future of the series might look like. Kamiyama was first to speak up to definitively say that “We don’t want it to end here” in regard to a second season of The Ninth Jedi, and Tada backed up his fellow director to say, “We all hope for the characters’ journey to be continued.” Itô concluded the trio’s thoughts on the show’s future, saying:

“This story is set in the galaxy long after the Jedi Order disappeared, and then now, with this series, Kara and the allies will become a new Jedi. So, for Episodes 7 and 8, at the end of the series, we took a lot of time to create that scenario. And thanks to Lucasfilm, James [Waugh] and George [Lucas], they were very kindly waiting for us. Maybe production’s scale got a little bigger. So, at the end of the writing, we had a lot of conversations, and we have a lot of different possibilities. I know a lot of fans will question so many things, and fans love to see more, and we all love to keep going, but I’m looking forward to seeing how fans react.”
