If the 2026 box office has taught us anything, it’s that audiences can’t get enough of the horror genre. That past month has been dominated by the record-breaking rise of two fresh horror stories, both helmed by YouTuber-turned-directors. The first, Focus Features’ Obsession, is directed by Curry Barker and features a career-defining performance from breakout star Inde Navarrette, who is earning plenty of awards buzz. The highest-grossing film with a sub-million-dollar budget ever, it is also reported to be the top-grossing festival acquisition title of all time.
The second is the viral horror triumph Backrooms, which is directed by 21-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons, who has now become the youngest director ever to claim the #1 spot on the North American box office charts. But, although these two movies have dominated recent discourse, they are far from the only success stories this year, with one of the best horror comedies of the past decade officially returning to plenty of positive acclaim in March.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, a sequel to the 2019 breath of fresh air directed by Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, saw **Samara Weaving **directly follow the gruesome events of the first encounter, as she dons the blood-soaked wedding dress once more and takes on an even more violent game of cat-and-mouse.
The cast for the sequel was bolstered with plenty of famous faces, including The Lord of the Rings icon, Elijah Wood, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, Kevin Durand, and David Cronenberg. Kathryn Newton also joins as Grace’s estranged younger sister, Faith, who joins her in the latest fight for freedom. For anyone who missed this 2026 horror gem, you’re in luck, as it’s now been announced that the film will** start streaming on July 2 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S**.
Your instincts, your strengths, and your particular way of thinking under pressure point to one villain you actually have a fighting chance against. Everyone else — good luck.
Jason is relentless, but he is also predictable — and that is the gap you would exploit.
Michael watches before he moves. He is patient, methodical, and almost impossible to detect — until it’s too late for anyone who isn’t paying close enough attention.
Freddy wins by getting inside your head — using your own fears, your own memories, your own subconscious as weapons against you. That strategy requires a target who can be destabilised.
Pennywise is ancient, shapeshifting, and feeds on terror — but it has one critical vulnerability: it cannot function against someone who genuinely stops being afraid of it.
Chucky’s greatest advantage is that nobody takes him seriously until it’s already too late. He exploits the gap between how something looks and what it actually is.
After the first film turned a $6 million budget into $54 million worldwide, hope was high that *Ready or Not 2 *would return similar success. Against a bigger budget of $14 million, the sequel was a quiet triumph at the spring box office, scoring a global haul of $43 million, split between $23 million in domestic revenue and a further $20 million from overseas markets. This result has given fans hope of a threequel, with rumors suggesting a next installment could be in development stages, though nothing has been announced yet.
*Ready or Not 2: Here I Come *is streaming on July 2 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
