Through no fault of his own, Zack Snyder has become one of the most polarizing filmmakers in the world in the last 10 years. Much of this is due to his fan base’s continued demand to “Restore the SnyderVerse,” by which they mean bringing back Henry Cavill to play Superman and continuing the story of the DCEU, which has been largely discarded. Snyder does have plenty of notable non-DCEU films under his belt, though, even if he’s best known for his work writing and directing superhero movies. Back in 2006, Snyder teamed up with Gerard Butler for the historical action epic, 300, which also stars Michael Fassbender and Lena Headey. Snyder’s first post-DC movie came back in 2021 with the Netflix original zombie thriller, Army of the Dead, and he returned to the streamer not long after for an ambitious new project that didn’t exactly pan out.
In 2023 and 2024, Zack Snyder released a pair of sci-fi fantasy movies onto Netflix with Rebel Moon Parts 1 and 2, A Child of Fire and The Scargiver. Both films were viewed as two of the biggest movies ever to release straight-to-streaming on Netflix, but neither was met with the reception that Snyder or the studio had hoped. Now that some time has passed and fans have had a chance to reflect on the Rebel Moon movies, fans have begun to agree that perhaps they were too harsh on the films when they were first released. Snyder has since unleashed a pair of director’s cuts for each* Rebel Moon* film, but neither did enough to rewrite the history of how they’re remembered.
Your answers point to the iconic universe your values, your instincts, and your particular way of seeing the world were built for. This is where you would find your people — and your purpose.
You believe in the cause — in the idea that freedom is worth fighting for even when the odds are impossible and the empire is vast.
You understand, in the deepest part of yourself, that the journey matters as much as the destination — and that the world’s beauty is worth protecting even at great cost.
You believe that love, loyalty, and doing what’s right are not naive sentiments — they are the most powerful forces in any world, magical or otherwise.
You see the world clearly — its power structures, its hypocrisies, its brutal arithmetic — and you are not paralysed by that clarity. You use it.
You believe the future is worth building — that curiosity, cooperation, and the expansion of understanding are not just ideals but the most practical path forward for any civilisation.
A brief synopsis of both Rebel Moon movies reads as follows:
“When the tyrannical Motherworld sets its sights on the peaceful farming moon of Veldt, a mysterious former Imperium soldier named Kora assembles a band of outcasts and warriors to defend it. Facing a relentless Admiral and an empire’s full might, the rebels uncover buried truths, forge unbreakable bonds, and ignite a galaxy-wide revolution.”
It’s been confirmed that there were plans for more Rebel Moon movies, but the reception and underwhelming performance of the first two has likely sealed the fate of any other potential installments. Snyder does still have some exciting projects in the works, though, not least of which is a remake of Escape From New York, the 1981 action thriller starring Kurt Russell.
