Two X-Men villains are merged into a brand-new Marvel character who comes from the future to destabilize the timeline. The X-Gene occasionally bypasses common enhancements to create unique abilities. For example, ForgetMeNot’s power is a state of perpetual imperceptibility, Choir has three extra mouths on her neck, Tattoo can spawn messages on her skin at will, and Bailey Hoskins can explode, but only once. Toad, a staple of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, also has quite a bizarre mutation, being proficient at jumping and using his extremely long tongue as a weapon.

The vast majority of the mutant population shares a predictable set of common superpowers. Mutantkind’s most prevalent subset is probably telepathy and telekinesis, abilities shared by massive powerhouses like Professor Charles Xavier, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Psylocke, Rachel Summers, and Cable. Similarly, regenerative healing factors and hyper-acute sensory perceptions are common across the feral classification of mutants, including Wolverine, Sabretooth, X-23, Daken, Mystique, and Deadpool. And more surprisingly, the highly unrealistic physical transmutation is a recurring evolutionary trait, shared by characters like Colossus, Emma Frost, Rockslide, Husk, and Mercury.

Element manipulation abilities aren’t as common among mutants as one would think, which means that characters like Pyro stand out above hundreds of more powerful X-Men friends and foes.

Saladin Ahmed’s Bishop follows titles like Storm and Cyclops as one of 2026’s X-Men solo titles focused on a single mutant icon. Set in present-day Brooklyn, Bishop sees the titular energy-absorbing mutant hero return from the future, hunted by the future supervillains known as the Final Brotherhood. In issue #1, Bishop comes face to face with one of his new enemies, Flamequake, who possesses the powers and costume of two major X-Men villains, the seismic wave-manipulating Avalanche and the fire-manipulating Pyro, of Brotherhood of Evil Mutants fame.

Lucas Bishop plays a key role in three concurrent comics: Bishop, X-Men ‘97 Season 2, and *Civil War: Unmasked *#1.

Shard’s arrival forces Bishop into the dilemma of adhering to his lifelong principles to shield the integrity of the timeline, or risk rewriting reality to rescue his sister from her predetermined demise. The Final Brotherhood’s time-warping hybrid villains, like Flamequake, have crossed the boundaries of history with the goal of completely erasing Bishop from existence before he can fulfill his destiny and join the X-Men. So, besides merging the legacies of two lifelong X-Men enemies, Flamequake also threatens the very flow of time.

Amalgamation characters allow Marvel to explore highly inventive visual aesthetics and terrifying power dynamics that go far beyond traditional team-ups. A classic example in main continuity is Onslaught, born from the combined psionic consciousness of Charles Xavier and Magneto and wearing a modified version of Magneto’s armor. Similarly, Chimeras developed during the Krakoan era surpass the limits of regular mutant abilities. Rasputin IV is the most popular Chimera, possessing Colossus’ metal skin, Kid Omega’s telepathy, Kitty Pryde’s phasing abilities, and Laura Kinney’s healing factor, plus Magik’s Soulsword.

X-Men ‘97 finally pays off The Animated Series’ teases and introduces X-Force, led by Cable and promising a crucial role in season 2 of the show.

During Infinity Wars, the Marvel Universe witnessed the birth of the Infinity Warps, an entire reality where the souls of legendary heroes were folded into one another by Gamora. This event gave rise to highly memorable concepts like the Captain America and Doctor Strange fusion Soldier Supreme, the X-23 and Scarlet Witch fusion Weapon Hex, and the Ghost Rider and Black Panther fusion Ghost Panther. Two decades later, Infinity Wars became the spiritual succesor to Marvel and DC’s Amalgam Universe and its merged characters.

The sheer scale of Marvel’s character roster leaves an abundance of thrilling fusion possibilities that could star in new storylines. For instance, blending Cyclops’ optic blasts with Gambit’s kinetic charging would create a fighter capable of projecting explosive red-burning energy directly into charged objects through a glance. A fusion between Nightcrawler and Colossus would introduce a steel-skinned brawler who can instantly teleport heavy mass directly into an opponent’s blind spot. Combined with Rogue’s life-force absorption, Bishop’s energy absorption could make a new mutant character virtually untouchable, as all melee and ranged attacks could be negated.
