“Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” Sequel Begins Production
After many years of development, Disney has officially announced that production has begun on a sequel to the hit 1997 film “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion”.
The original film told the story of Romy and Michele, who are carefree party girls who reinvent themselves for their 10-year high school reunion. With new wardrobes and wild stories of success, they make a big impression … until a former classmate blabs their real story to everyone! But that’s when Romy and Michele let loose with a surprise of their own … and outrageous results!
Unfortunately, no plot details on the sequel have been revealed, but it will be coming to Hulu and Disney+.
A photo of the stars of the film, Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, on the set was released on social media:
“The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”
Also returning for the sequel are Alan Cumming (Sandy Frink), Janeane Garofalo (Heather), Camryn Manheim (Toby) and Julia Campbell (Christie Masters). It’s also been confirmed that Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham have joined the cast for the film, though no details on their characters have been revealed.
It’s also been confirmed on social media that the original film’s costume designer, Mona May, is also returning to work on the film, saying:
“I’m so excited to be a part of this amazing project to keep the DNA of the characters and design the fashions to be as fun and fabulous as the original film. Romy and Michele are forever fashionistas, and I’m so excited to be working with Lisa and Mira again.”
The sequel is going to be directed and produced by Tim Federle, who previously worked on “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”. With Robin Schiff, who wrote the original movie, also returned to write the sequel. Other producers include Laurence Mark, with Barry Kemp, along with Sorvino, Kudrow and Schiff also executive producing. Kimberly McCullough serves as co-producer.
“Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” is available to stream now on Hulu and Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.
