Tomb Raider is a seminal franchise, and it’s enjoying the height of its popularity today with an Unreal Engine 5 remake, a brand-new mainline installment, and an Amazon Prime Video TV show adaptation on its bright horizon. Like any franchise that has endured and thrived for 30 years, it is only natural that there are distinguished and generational Tomb Raider eras for new audiences and players to claim as their favorite.
Similarly, it is perhaps unrealistic to expect that the same actor would play Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft three decades later. It’s neat to have a different Lara actor define the particular era that they were ascribed to, such as Shelley Blond, Judith Gibbins, and Jonell Elliott playing Lara across Tomb Raider’s classic entries (Tomb Raider 1 through 6). Now, Tomb Raider’s newest era is introducing another Lara to the fold.
On Reddit, Tomb Raider fans are discussing the game franchise’s legacy and their thoughts on Mass Effect 3, Lies of P: Overture, and Cyberpunk 2077’s Alix Wilton Regan being the latest actor to portray Lara. Interestingly, not only will Regan play Lara in the remake of the first game, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, but also in the latest mainline game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, which means her performance will span the whole Tomb Raider mythos.
As a testament to how excellent Camilla Luddington was as Lara in Tomb Raider’s prequel Survivor trilogy, many fans are sad she is not reprising the role. As user -ImJustSaiyan- writes, “Really gonna miss Camilla in the role but this isn’t the first time Lara had been recast and it won’t be the last, so I’m willing to give Alix’s Lara a chance.”
With each era Tomb Raider fans have been treated to featuring a new actor for Lara, and fans are warmly accepting of the fact that she has inevitably been recast yet again for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. “Lara is like the James Bond of video games. It’s a new era, a change is almost expected,” states user skyturnedred.
User Lerkpots’ personal favorite Lara Croft is the Tomb Raider LAU trilogy’s Keeley Hawes, but they are “sure Alix will do a good job.” Because the last Tomb Raider game was released almost eight years ago, Regan’s Lara will be to new fans what Hawes and Luddington’s were to players during their respective games’ eras, too.
It will be neat to see how Regan’s performance varies between Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, as well as whether Regan will be the franchise’s new Lara Croft for much longer thereafter. Perhaps a new trilogy could blossom from Tomb Raider: Catalyst as its root, granting Regan a rich future with the series and at least four potential Tomb Raider games to star in.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
