Steven Spielberg’s return to the world of sci-fi, extraterrestrials, and eerie happenings has been long, long overdue. So few filmmakers have shaped the way audiences look at the unknown quite like Spielberg, and that’s through tools as varied and vivid as wonder, fear, and that extremely specific feeling that something our minds cannot possibly fathom is just over the horizon. But Spielberg’s best work in the world of sci-fi has always understood, first and foremost, that aliens, strange lights, and flying saucers are only half the point, because without people looking up at the skies, you don’t have a story.
We’re just a couple of weeks away from Disclosure Day, the mysterious new sci-fi movie that brings Spielberg back to one of the cinematic spaces he helped define decades ago. The film will be released theatrically on June 12, and while plenty about the project remains under wraps, Collider is thrilled to unveil an exclusive sneak peek at the movie, as part of our Summer Preview Event. The new still features Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, Edge of Tomorrow) and Wyatt Russell (Thunderbolts, Avengers: Doomsday), and the vibes are off, let’s just say that much.
The film follows a group of people who are affected by the unveiling of a giant, worldwide conspiracy. Whistleblower Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) decides the 7 billion people on Earth have a right to the truth about extraterrestrial contact and attempts to bypass a multi-decade cover-up, while Blunt’s Margaret Fairchild, a Kansas City meteorologist, randomly starts speaking in a strange, otherworldly language on live television, setting everything in motion. The film’s synopsis states: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to… Disclosure Day.”
