The Expanse has an underrated release that many might not have heard about, and it enhances the story of the sci-fi series. There have been many exciting sci-fi shows over the years, with The Expanse, The 100, and other genre series finding enormous success. More recently, streaming sci-fi series have also added a lot to the genre, with several popular releases.
Silo, The Mandalorian, Stranger Things, Black Mirror, Foundation, Andor, Severance, The Peripheral, Paradise, and more make up just a few of the most exciting sci-fi TV shows in recent years. That said, while the genre is certainly seeing a wave of positivity, few shows have managed to get quite where The Expanse is in terms of its popularity, contributions to the genre, and quality.
Over the course of six seasons, with half of them airing on Syfy and the other half on Prime Video, *The Expanse *carved a special corner of the genre for itself. The space opera is a masterclass of how to blend complex sci-fi elements with grounded logic for those events, as well as playing with politics in a way that creates a more cerebral and grittier sci-fi project than most other genre releases.
While The Expanse is fantastic as it is, the sci-fi series becomes even better once you have played or watched The Expanse: A Telltale Series. Coming from the same company that created classics like Telltale’s The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, the video game enhances *The Expanse *through a six-episode sci-fi journey with key characters.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series serves as the perfect prequel to the hit sci-fi show. There are five core episodes and an epilogue. In the main part of the game, players take on the role of none other than Camina Drummer, with Cara Gee returning as the character. Drummer goes on to become a crucial character in The Expanse, and through Telltale’s underrated entry in the franchise, fans of the sci-fi series can see how she became the way she is. Drummer leads a crew of unique characters, makes hard choices, explores space, and more in the action-packed, emotional journey.
The game explains Drummer’s backstory and how she came to work with Chad L. Coleman’s Fred Johnson on Tycho Station. While Drummer is the star of The Expanse prequel, Chrisjen Avasarala, played by returning star Shohreh Aghdashloo, also gets her time to shine. Players take control of Avasarala on a crucial day in her life in the bonus episode, “Archangel,” having to navigate the complex politics of the space opera series and interacting with her son. Avasarala’s segment of the story is very different from Drummer’s, but just as enlightening for who she is as a character.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series successfully improves the Prime Video series by adding more depth and emotional impact to two key characters from* The Expanse*. In theory, a second season of the game could end up happening, as it would fit with Telltale’s way of doing things and the TV show nature of The Expanse. In the past, Telltale released multiple seasons of its The Walking Dead, Batman, and Minecraft games. However, given that the prequel to The Expanse debuted on July 27, 2023, and concluded that November, with no updates since, a second season is unlikely.
Additionally, all the focus at Telltale seems to be on the highly anticipated* The Wolf Among Us 2*, which will continue one of the video game company’s biggest hits and has not had concrete updates in quite some time. Still, even if this venture into The Expanse world in video game form remains contained to just one season, the six episodes of* The Expanse: A Telltale Series ***do a phenomenal job of enhancing the sci-fi series by showcasing the emotional backstories of two crucial characters.
