Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for The Boys season 5, episode 7!***The Boys ***has brought one of its stars back into the musical world.

Daveed Diggs, who portrays Oh Father, has explained how The Boys season 5 convinced him to break his musical rejection streak after having starred in Hamilton. The actor earned widespread recognition for his roles as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the musical, earning both a Tony and Grammy in the process. Since then, his roles onscreen and onstage haven’t been as musical-oriented. However, he ends up rehearsing a musical number as Oh Father at the very start of season 5, episode 7.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender, Diggs explained how *The Boys *season 5 convinced him to break a musical rejection streak that began after his performance in Hamilton. The actor said that, for many of the roles he’s been cast in since, he’s been asked if he can do a musical number. He’s always turned down the idea, except for when it came to The Boys. Diggs explained that, because of how much he enjoyed his time on the show coupled with a talented music team, he found the idea enticing.

ScreenRant: Last but not least, it was incredible to hear you singing that Homelander Jesus number. Will it be on Spotify?

Daveed Diggs: We’ll see! They approached me a few episodes in and were like, “Would you do this?” I’ve been asked to do that on a lot of shows, and I always say no, but the music team on this show is so good. I liked the show and trusted in what they were doing, and I was very happy that we did it. It ended up being so much fun.

Diggs has had a number of musical roles following his time on Hamilton. This includes voicing Sebastian the Crab on the cast of *The Little Mermaid *live-action remake, as well as Spruce in the animated comedy Trolls Band Together. However, the majority of his roles since have been non-musical, both on the big and small screens. For TV, he’s had a mix of live-action and voice roles, though none of them have asked him to sing in the way that *The Boys *season 5’s penultimate episode had him perform.

Diggs’ performance wasn’t only fun for him and the audience, but also an important aspect of developing the story for the episode. His singing and dancing routine is part of the promotion for Homelander’s ascension to Godhood, convincing the world that he is, in fact, the one true God. While *The Boys *characters acknowledge it comes from a place of ego, Oh Father genuinely believes in Homelander’s ability to unite people, explaining his propensity to support him in such a major way.

Of course, this performance is contrasted by his later doubts in the episode, when he’s forced by Homelander to allow Dogknott and Sheline to kill focus group members who didn’t believe he was God. It makes the musical number all the more impactful, as when it’s eventually performed publicly with the intent of making people see Homelander as God, Oh Father might not be as convinced as he was when he first performed it.

As one of the only times Diggs agreed to a musical number on a TV show, though, it maintained an important impact in the episode that would have been lost had it been cut. With ***The Boys ***now hurtling toward the final stage of the story, it remains to be seen if Oh Father’s performance will loop back around in a thematic way after the bigger events of season 5, episode 7.
