Matt Shakman To Direct New “Planet Of The Apes” Movie
Following on from the success of the revival of the “Planet Of The Apes” franchise with the 2024 film, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes”, work soon started on making another instalment in the popular sci-fi franchise.
According to Deadline, Matt Shakman has joined the project as the director, following his success with Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and the Disney+ Original series, “WandaVision”. He also has worked on the Godzilla/King Kong franchise with Apple TV’s “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”. Matt will also be a producer on the project, along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
Also working on this new film will be Josh Friedman, who will be writing the film, having previously with Matt on the recent “Fantastic Four” film, along with 20th Century Studios on “Avatar: The Way of Water”, “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”.
No plot details on the upcoming film have been revealed, other than it will take place on the planet where apes are the superior species, but it won’t be a direct continuation of the most recent “Planet of the Apes” movie.
Disney has been looking to take advantage of 20th Century Studios’ biggest franchises, with “Planet Of The Apes” pulling in over $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office between all of the films released since the late 1960s.
As with any project in the early stages, creative teams could change, and this film might be years away from hitting cinemas or Disney+.
The previous “Planet Of The Apes” films are available to stream on Disney+ in many countries around the world.
Roger’s Take: I’ve been a big fan of the franchise for decades, and it’s great to see Disney continuing to build out this series. I do wonder if this might be a film that could come out after a direct sequel to the last film, giving them a chance to go in a new direction.
