They’re two very different creatures of Japanese origin, and they’ve never met…until now. Sonic the Hedgehog’s world is colliding with Godzilla, King of the Monsters, in a new comic book this summer. Collider is proud to present an exclusive preview of Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1, which will hit stores on July 15, courtesy of IDW Comics.
The series kicks off when Sonic and pals are battling their nemesis Dr. Eggman, only for a rift in reality to drop two kaiju into their midst: Mothra and Mechagodzilla. Unfortunately for Team Sonic, the robotics genius of Eggman and the mechanical menace of Mechagodzilla are a match made in Hell. Says writer Nick Marino: “I love the way my collaborators, artist Jack Lawrence and colorist Reggie Graham, visualize the relationship between Dr. Eggman and Mechagodzilla.** The connection between these characters is kind of playful and almost codependent from the very beginning.** Eggman sees so much potential in this mechanical monster, like a twisted cross between My Fair Lady and Frankenstein. That’s worlds away from the interactions Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles have with the invading kaiju.”
That’s not the only movie connection Marino makes to the comic; this one might have you rushing to your nearest streaming service to explore the lesser-known works of Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess:
“For you deep cut cinema buffs out there, the Eggman voice in my head sounds like Jemaine Clement in Gentlemen Broncos. Akin to Dr. Ronald Chevalier, my Eggman is pompous, scheming, and endlessly imaginative. While the encounter is initially exhilarating, Mechagodzilla quickly becomes a means to an end for Eggman. The mad scientist has some ambitious projects that’ve been sitting on his work bench and Mechagodzilla might be the missing component to elevate those evil schemes to their full fruition. The worst thing that could happen to Team Sonic is Eggman getting his hands on this massive robot!”
Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1 features covers by Lawrence, Miles Arq, Mico Suayan, Mauro Fonseca, Natalie Haines, Clayton Crain, and Min Ho Kim. The first issue will hit store shelves on July 15; if you want a guaranteed copy, you’ll need to pre-order it at your local comic shop by June 8.
Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.
You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.
The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.
You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.
Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.
The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Big G has been starring in crossovers almost since the beginning. Starting out in 1962, he battled trans-Pacific rival King Kong in King Kong vs. Godzilla; he’d go on to slug it out with fellow Toho properties Mothra and Rodan, who were the stars of their own films before they took on Godzilla. In the 1970s, he starred in his own Marvel Comics series; set in the Marvel Universe, he regularly crossed paths with Spider-Man, the Avengers, and even Devil Dinosaur. The 1990s saw him star in a popular Nike ad that pitted him against a giant-sized Charles Barkley; it proved popular enough to get its own comic book adaptation. In recent years, not only has he resumed his big-screen hostilities with Kong, Mothra, and Rodan, but he’s starred in some wild crossover comic books. He’s re-encountered the Marvel Universe, crashed into the world of DC Comics, and battled the Power Rangers. He’s even taken on the titans of classic literature, like Jay Gatsby and Sherlock Holmes, in Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre.
Both the Godzilla and Sonic franchises are headed back to the big screen in the near future. ***Godzilla Minus Zero ***stomps into theaters this November, while Godzilla x King: Supernova, the latest meeting between the two titans, will begin wreaking havoc in March 2027. That’s the same month that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will race into the multiplex.
Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1 will be released on July 15; the final order cutoff is on June 8. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
