The least likely Avenger undergoes a drastic, monstrous transformation that makes him unrecognizable from his traditionally heroic self. Each of the Avengers provides unique skills and a unique visual edge to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Black Panther, and Scarlet Witch are instantly recognizable even during periods of dramatic visual overhauls.
Iron Man constantly changes and upgrades his suits of armor depending on the situation. Peter Parker doesn’t fall too far behind, with a wide variety of Spider-Man costumes that range everywhere from the Iron Spider suit to the all-black Dusk costume and the Technarachnid suit called Glitch. Even Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, and Captain Marvel have changed their traditionally consistent appearance. T’Challa has worn gritty vigilante attire, Wanda recently updated her wardrobe to suit her Sorcerer Supreme role, and Carol Danvers changed her Warbird bodysuit in favor of her now-iconic captain uniform.
Sooner or later, every Avenger eventually experiments with a different power set and a different look, even if it’s against their will.
Iron Man’s attempt to stop the Infernal Hulk wearing One Above All armor has failed, and the Infernal Hulk turns the battle around to transform Tony Stark into one of his own. Iron Man becomes a musclebound, misshapen purple monster wearing nothing but a metal mask and pieces of rustic armor. Soon enough, many of the Avengers suffer similar transformations, including a spider-monster Spider-Man, a crucified Captain America, giant elemental versions of the Fantastic Four, and an armored, one-eyed Vision with a huge exposed brain.
Vision’s monster form takes the Avenger’s name quite literally, with a big eye and a yellow-diamond pupil instead of a head. Vision’s synthezoid intelligence materializes in the form of a giant brain, solid enough to support the weight of another monster hero sitting on top of it. Vision’s traditional red-and-green color palette remains, but his bulky physique and expressionless eye make him unrecognizable. Like the crucified Captain America, this monster Vision is stabbed by spears. And surprisingly, Vision seems to be considerably bigger than the Infernal Hulk.
The Vision is one of the few constants across the chaotic sprawl of the Marvel multiverse, with a remarkably unified identity across countless timelines. Vision’s physical stability stems from his nature as a stoic synthezoid, a being of logic and artificial construction whose form isn’t subject to the whims of biological evolution or aging. While Peter Parker or Steve Rogers might vary wildly in age, appearance, or powers from one reality to the next, the Vision almost always emerges as a crimson-skinned, emerald-clad android with a solar gem embedded in his brow.
Marvel has a new mash-up of Hulk & Iron Man, but the character just got a signature upgrade that makes him even more unique and powerful.
Despite his general uniformity, a few rare timelines present deviations from his classic silhouette. On Earth-32659, during the UltraForce/Avengers crossover, Vision adopts a more complex, polychrome aesthetic with exposed wires that reflect the high-energy design trends of that reality. In the divergent timeline of Earth-21170 seen in Avengers Forever, Vision takes on a hauntingly different presence as a skeletal, ghostly figure. Within the primary Earth-616 continuity, his White Vision era is a significant outlier that has become popular enough to be replicated in other universes and other media.
The most drastic variations for Vision often lie in his origin story rather than his physical appearance. For instance, the MCU offers a major departure by making Tony Stark and Bruce Banner the Vision’s fathers instead of Hank Pym. Other realities have seen him created purely as a software program, a holographic projection, or even a mystical entity. The Infernal Hulk’s monster Vision is perhaps the biggest overhaul the Avengers’ synthezoid hero has undergone since his 1968 debut.
