The Legend of Zelda theories has been through several distinct eras over the years, with differing art styles and gameplay that most fans still debate today. The franchise is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and it has seen young and old members of the community discussing which exactly was best.
One of the most divisive at the time of its launch was the “toon” style, which debuted with The Wind Waker all the way back in . Essentially, fans had been shown the immense graphical capabilities of the GameCube (relatively speaking), and they were expecting realism from the next mainline *Zelda *release.
Since then, it has become considerably more well liked, with many looking at Wind Waker as a real high point for the series. Now, fans are questioning whether it should return, but not in the next 3D *Zelda *release.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post with their wish for the Toon Link art approach to make a comeback in the next 2D game in the series.
Many were very quick to agree, with one saying, “I think we needed a break from that style but also wouldn’t mind going back now.”
“I would love a new toon art style that is not the Wind Waker or Breath of the Wild styles. Or Hell just give us a game that looks like Akira’s manga work or Tarada’s old manual and guide work,” another added.
Others were considerably less convinced, saying, “Judging something by soul has never worked because no one thinks it means the same thing. This is your nostalgia talking. Let the art style rest, it’s already been used 3 times let’s move on to something new.”
“I think we had plenty of that toon style. I’m not saying I don’t like it, bit I like when they experiment with different styles of art, otherwise it starts to look stale,” another said.
This year is set to be a pretty big and exciting one for Legend of Zelda fans, with many expecting some major announcements as part of the anniversary celebrations. Rumors of a new Ocarina of Time release for the Switch 2 continue to swirl and production on the movie continues apace, with most expecting some more news around that over the next few months.
If we also get the announcement of the first ***Zelda ***game for the Switch 2, then it really will be an all-time few years to be a fan.
