No matter how many times fans second-guess the direction of the Batman: Arkham series, it will always be remembered for its mainline trilogy. The original set of Rocksteady games is still played the world over, as they generally capitalize on the experience of controlling Batman more than most games released before or since.

Still, the future of the series is in a weird spot right now. Beyond a VR spinoff prequel that’s actually pretty good, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, an official continuation of the *Arkham *timeline, did not deliver. Fans were dissatisfied with its microtransactions and live-service foundation from the start, and it stopped delivering updates within a year.

Now, all eyes are squarely on the older games in the series, including Batman: Arkham* Knight*. A next-gen version prospect has a lot of fans excited, and many folks are already discussing the sheer number of possibilities on places like Reddit.

Speculating over the future of Arkham as a whole, fans are clamoring for an official Batman: Arkham Knight current-generation upgrade.

A Reddit user has a pretty good idea of what the patch could entail: “I lowkey wanna tear my hair out. It’s so frustrating they could have made bank even if they charged $10 upgrade and just added 4k upscaling and 60 fps for consoles But nooo they had to make…SSKTJL. It’s insane how this game is stuck at 30 fps, but Return to Arkham is 60 fps.”

One fan has a theory on why we haven’t seen movement on this front: “Arkham Knight was developed with Unreal Engine 3, which hasn’t had support for Xbox series x/s and PS5 since the last version was released in February 2015. The Coalition had to hack early versions of UE4 on PS4 to port it forward to PS5. It would likely take a lot of capital that Warner bros doesn’t see as a sound return on investment unless it was sold at $60 and would sell 2-4 million copies at that price to be seen as profitable.”

Others are content with how the game is currently operating: “It’s perfectly fine to me, game still looks great and it’s still insanely fun to play. The only thing I would ask for is for them to add more skins but it’s not gonna kill me of they don’t.”

If we never get any current-generation upgrades for Batman: Arkham Knight, it would be a shame. Fans really took to the core trilogyand would play them in perpetuity (perhaps even mixing in Arkham Originsfor good measure).

The Batman: Arkham series will live on even if it goes on an extended hiatus. It’s also safe to say that these games should get another re-release, as Batman is an evergreen character that can always pop up decades later.
