Miles Morales: Spider-Man is returning this summer with a new creative team, and the ongoing series’ new run is already controversial. It does not appear to be tearing at the threads of Miles’ Spider-Man status quo yet (it is taking him back to basics, if anything), but one new development threatens to abruptly whisk one character away that fans have taken a liking to.
In fact, it is possible that this new development could help shape the next decade or so of Miles Morales: Spider-Man comics. Not unlike how Starling’s Tiana Toomes swooped in and stole Miles’ heart at the start of Saladin Ahmed and Javier Garrón’s run, Bryan Edward Hill and Nico Leon’s upcoming Miles Morales: Spider-Man run may be stirring the pot and unceremoniously swapping one love interest for another.
Tiana made a considerable impression on Miles, who referred to her as an “angel,” when she debuted in the last page of Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2019) #5. Now, for the better part of a decade, she has ultimately made one of the strongest impressions on the lore of Miles’ love life, as well.
The readership’s consensus on Tiana and Miles’ relationship seemed to have been tepid, but the response to the first issue solicitation of this third Miles Morales: Spider-Man volume/run tells a different story. Indeed, many fans are clearly distressed to learn that Miles Morales: Spider-Man could be introducing a brand-new love interest, thus breaking Miles and Tiana up and plucking her from his life:
“THE NEXT ERA OF MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN STARTS NOW!
MILES MORALES is back in black (and red)! SPIDER-MAN thinks he has it allllll handled: homework, super-villains… a new school crush?? No, no — Miles is focused on what matters: helping the good folks of Brooklyn. Friendly. Neighborhood. Spider-Manning at his best! But a vengeful villain from Jeff Morales’ past with SHIELD threatens to destroy not only Spider-Man — but the entire Morales family!”
Mention is made of Miles “finding time for date night,” suggesting that he and Tiana are together at the beginning of this upcoming run, and yet it does not seem as if they will be an item for much longer if Miles is developing feelings for someone else. Otherwise, Tiana is not mentioned at all in what few details we have about Hill and Leon’s run, and it is possible that Marvel is saying goodbye to her as a love interest for now.
Even with sliding timescales and such being incessant in Marvel comics, Miles is still incredibly young as a teenager and high school student. Therefore, it may arguably be a tad too early to begin shipping him with anyone as a potential ‘endgame’ romantic partner, even with such a storied history between him and Tiana.
And, as Spider-Man, Miles’ youth gives creatives the legroom with which they can have the character a bunch of love interests and test those waters. Miles has probably not been introduced to his ‘Mary Jane’ yet, for instance, and not tying him down to any one girl allows for greater diversity in terms of the characters he might meet in the future.
For example, it was neat to see Miles date Earth-1610’s Kate Bishop, and it would be terrific to see him and Lana Baumgartner blossom further.
Peter’s ‘endgame’ being MJ was spoiled and tarnished nearly 20 years ago, with Peter and MJ growing further apart after Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral event. Perhaps the best plan of action for Miles may be to not tether him exclusively to anyone, at least not while he is still in school, but Miles Morales: Spider-Man hopefully has a compelling excuse in its storytelling as to why he and Tiana might not be dating anymore.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 is scheduled to be released on August 12, 2026.
