The Witcher 3 has had an impressive run. Released over a decade ago, it’s received numerous free updates and two major story DLCs. It’s still referred to as one of CD Projekt Red’s finest works for a reason: the world feels incredibly alive and expansive. It’s really easy to get lost in it, even compared to a lot of other open-world games released since.
Many fans are even holding out hope for a third DLC, which would theoretically link The Witcher 3 to The Witcher 4. It’s a tall order, but CD Projekt Red has surprised fans before, even in the case of Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher 4 is still a way out, so there’s a chance we could see it at some point, but for now, CD Projekt Red is mum.
You won’t need to wait to play The Witcher 3 online, however. Over on Nexus Mods, you can check out a new version of Witcher Online now (via DSO Gaming).
For weeks, fans have waited for the release of the Witcher Online mod, and now you can try out version 2.1. This update ushers in hotfixes and addresses some bugs, so if you were having issues connecting before, give it another shot. It also adds a feature commonly found in many online games: a menu with a custom keybind to “emote, chat, or change morphs.”
While the original edition was mainly a “hangout” mod without world sync, modder rejuvenate has made a lot of strides with the project, eventually allowing players to explore the countryside together.
Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect from the mod: “Witcher Online is a mod that adds multiplayer to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, turning your single player experience into an MMO experience. Join servers to play with your friends, customize your character using Custom Player Characters and relax in taverns using Chill Out. Chat with strangers and perform emotes to roleplay with other players. Complete quests alongside friends.”
Right now, we’re still wondering if CD Projekt Red is going to put a capstone DLC on The Witcher 3. It would be a perfect opportunity to do so, leading into Witcher 4, but we could also get a curveball in the form of a smaller standalone adventure, if only to bridge the gap between the two mainline entries. It’s pie in the sky for sure, but stranger things have happened.
Either way, *The Witcher *fans are riding high right now. The Witcher 3 is as supported as ever thanks to the modding community, and the game itself (especially when you account for the DLC) still has a stellar reputation. Given how CD Projekt Red pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the jaws of defeat, fans are once again hyped for what the sequel can bring to the table.
