Ridley Scott has a new sci-fi movie on the horizon, and it could make up for his post-apocalyptic series that was canceled way too soon. When Ridley Scott has a new sci-fi project coming out, people should pay attention. That’s the confidence you inspire as the director of Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus, and The Martian.
His sci-fi credits aren’t only relegated to movies either, and he’s had a hand in shows like The Man in the High Castle, Alien Earth, and Halo: Nightfall. Scott also directed the first two episodes of HBO Max’s Raised by Wolves, for which he was also an executive producer.
Raised by Wolves is a two-season post-apocalyptic drama centering on two androids dubbed “Mother” (Amanda Collin) and “Father” (Abubakar Salim) who are tasked with raising the last human children after the Earth is destroyed. Despite positive reviews, the series was canceled after season 2.
Ridley Scott is thankfully dipping back into post-apocalyptic sci-fi, with his upcoming film, The Dog Stars, which will debut on August 28, 2026. After a devastating pandemic, two survivors hold on to hope that there is a better life beyond their meager, lonely one. It might not be Raised by Wolves season 3, but it’s something.
Hopefully, Ridley Scott’s return to the sci-fi arena for a big-budget movie with major stars, including Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong, will wash out the bad taste that Raised by Wolves’ cancellation left in people’s mouths.
Raised by Wolves had a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes for season 1 and then jumped to an 86% for season 2. The series was on the upswing, and season 2 was diving even deeper into the strangeness and disturbing nature of its universe in a way that few shows are willing to do.
Then Raised by Wolves was canceled in 2022 with little fanfare. Most people had to hear about it from a Tweet from Abubakar Salim. While no official reason has been given, it’s highly likely it was cut for budgetary reasons after the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc.
One canceled show isn’t enough to stop Ridley Scott, though. At 88, Scott has not slowed his output once, and it seems that almost nothing will keep him from making movies. The quality has not gone down either. He’s directed some of his most acclaimed and surprising films in the last 11 years.
The Martian was a real crowd-pleaser. Alien: Covenant was messy, but quite a lot of fun. The Last Duel is criminally underrated and underseen, and has an argument to be one of his top five films. House of Gucci was funny, weird, and entertaining. Napoleon is strangely beautiful and worth your time.
Ridley Scott is one of those directors that you can bet against at your own risk. The Dog Stars has the capacity to be as good as anything he’s made recently, including Raised by Wolves, and that’s a high standard.
