Over the years, Marvel Comics has been the home not just for groundbreaking superhero stories, but stunning, diverse art from award-winning illustrators that define specific eras and runs on the page. Clover Press and Marvel have been working together to honor some of these standout artists through a series of boutique artbooks titled The Marvel Art of…, starting in 2023 with The Marvel Art of David Mack. Since then, nine of these high-end books have been put together, highlighting Alex Maleev, Michael Allred, Russell Dauterman, Mike Del Mundo, and Dan dos Santos, among others, with a mix of iconic images and rare or never-before-seen artwork from their careers. A tenth installment is now officially on the way and Collider is excited to share the official cover ahead of the launch of its Kickstarter campaign.
This newest installment from Clover Press is The Marvel Art of Mike Zeck and it promises a portfolio, prints, and more from his legendary career all bound in a package that’s made for coffee table display. Beginning his comics work in 1974, Zeck was a massively-influential force during his time with Marvel, first making a name for himself in 1977 as the penciler for Shang-Chi, Master of Kung-Fu. His first defining project, however, came in 1984 when he worked on the landmark crossover event, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, the same story that will inspire 2027’s upcoming Avengers epic. He forever made his mark with the storyline, designing Spider-Man’s iconic black suit featured in its pages. If not for Secret Wars, many readers and artists alike will also remember him for the first Punisher mini-series in 1986, a run that would go on to define how all artists from thereon out would design Frank Castle on the page.
The cover of the book depicts a color recreation of a clash between Wolverine and Captain America, artwork originally featured on the cover of Captain America Annual #8. It’s a dynamic piece, showing the explosive moment when the X-Men member’s adamantium claws meets the first Avenger’s vibranium shield with a bright flash. It’s also a perfect illustration of the kind of pieces fans will find inside The Marvel Art of Mike Zeck. Each page promises some of Zeck’s most action-packed and jaw-dropping work from across the Marvel universe, including from series like Captain America, Spectacular Spider-Man, Punisher: Circle of Blood, and Kraven’s Last Hunt. In all, the book measures 9″ x 12″ and spans over 200 pages of art and insight into his creative process.
Based on your answers, the Marvel hero who matches your spirit, values, and instincts has been revealed.
You carry the weight of the world on shoulders that are younger than they should have to be — funny, loyal, and endlessly self-sacrificing.
You fight in the shadows between law and chaos, guided by a fierce moral compass that refuses to let the guilty walk free.
Brilliant, driven, and occasionally insufferable — but always the person who solves the unsolvable problem.
You’ve been through fire that would break most people — and it did change you, completely. What’s left is unyielding, relentless, and operating by a code forged in grief.
Powerful, proud, and on a lifelong journey to become worthy of the legend you carry.
You believe in something bigger than yourself — and you fight for it even when the world has moved on and nobody else will.
It’s hard to overstate just how important Zeck’s work was to Marvel to this day. His influence on The Punisher can be felt all the way to the screen on to Jon Bernthal’s iconic portrayal of the vigilante. Avengers: Secret Wars is also bound to have a few nods to his stunning artwork as well. The book is a great collector’s item for fans of all kinds, then, from those with familiarity of his work and those wanting more insight into the history of these characters and the person that built them up through his designs. Alongside the book itself, the Kickstarter campaign will feature 11″x17″ prints, stickers, a puzzle, signed books, and more goodies.
For Clover Press Publisher Hank Kalanz, the opportunity to put together this testament to Zeck had a more personal importance. “I first met Mike at the Chicago Comicon in 1986 right after his Punisher was released, and he left such a positive impression on this very impressionable kid,” he said in an official statement. “I had the privilege of working with him on a couple of projects over the years, and I am thrilled that in retirement, he’s agreed to be a part of our prestigious The Marvel Art Of… line of art books.”
The campaign for The Marvel Art of Mike Zeck will launch soon on Kickstarter and BackerKit. In the meantime, check out the book’s cover above.
