Dexter has remained one of the most recognizable slasher shows even years after wrapping in 2013, but it wasn’t until it arrived on Netflix that it experienced a major revival. The series spent multiple months topping the platform’s charts, as a fresh wave of viewers embraced its distinctive take on the serial killer genre, focusing on the killer instead of the investigators pursuing him. In Dexter’s case, though, he targets individuals who have committed horrific crimes themselves, making him one of the more interesting characters to root for in television history. The show’s streaming resurgence ultimately pushed Paramount, which holds the rights, to move forward with several spin-offs that began releasing in 2024.
The first spin-off, Dexter: New Blood, actually debuted earlier in 2021, but after just one season, many fans were underwhelmed, with some even opting not to treat it as canon. The next chapter, Dexter: Original Sin, premiered in November 2024 and acted as a prequel, starring Patrick Gibson as a younger Dexter beginning to understand his violent tendencies. The newest installment, Dexter: Resurrection, brought back Michael C. Hall in a continuation that leaned more into the tone of the original, shifting the setting from Miami to New York. Season 1 of Resurrection also featured notable names like Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage. It was even revealed two weeks ago that Brian Cox has joined Season 2 as the New York Ripper, a former serial killer who still psychologically torments his victims despite no longer killing. After recently confirming that Uma Thurman would reprise her role as Charley, Paramount has further expanded the ensemble by casting Dan Stevens in a key role in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. Stevens will play the Five Borough Killer, a serial killer who, like the Zodiac, taunts the police with phone calls threatening the murder of innocent citizens.

The most unexpected cancellation came with Original Sin, which had previously been renewed for a second season before being scrapped ahead of production. Dexter creator Clyde Phillips also shared that a planned Trinity Killer spin-off, which would have seen John Lithgow reprise the role, was abandoned as well. That leaves Resurrection as the only active Dexter series currently moving forward. Paramount has already renewed it for Season 2, though an official release date hasn’t been announced yet, with production expected to begin soon.
