In the understandable opinion of many, The Witcher 3 is one of the best RPGs of all-time, with CD Projekt Red further refining their now inimitable style into an experience that many players continue to return to, more than a decade since its initial release.
Work is now well underway on the sequel, with around 80% of the developer’s workforce now actively pursuing the game, while the remainder work on the early stages of a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and an entirely new IP known only as Project Hadar for the time being. Whilst we wait for the eventual arrival of The Witcher 4, there are ways to refresh the existing experience, and one free download takes things further than most.
Over on Nexus Mods, you should be able to find the page for Eternal Hunt, a massive content pack for The Witcher 3 that overhauls everything from the animations to the armor and weapons.
It’s difficult to overstate just how ambitious this mod is, so to get into the gritty details, it features a full redux of the combat animations, making fights feel very different across the board. At the same time, it adds additional targeting systems, as well as changes to stamina, parries, finishers and a lot more, leaving combat in an entirely different state by the time it’s done.
Sneaking has also been improved significantly, and many of the enemies that you’ll face on your quest have been updated to make them more varied or accurate to the lore. It also adds more than 40 encounters to the base game that you can come across while you adventure, alongside pseudo-quests, and special encounters that are tantamount to very difficult boss fights.
Visuals have also been tightened up in everything from the models to foliage and other landscapes, while the HUD features additional modules and quality-of-life features. So many of the changes are so tangibly brilliant that you’ll be shocked you’ve been playing the game for this long without it.
The fact remains that The Witcher 3 has been given years of extra longevity thanks to the dedicated modding community that calls the game home. The sequel is undoubtedly exciting, but there really is plenty more fun to be had with the last game before The Witcher 4 eventually arrives at some point in the next few years.
