Abbott Elementary star William Stanford Davis hints at when Mr. Johnson’s first name will finally be revealed.

The school custodian played by Davis is a fan-favorite character, who takes his job seriously while also believing in wild conspiracy theories and making outlandish statements. Over the course of five seasons, many details about Mr. Johnson’s colorful past have been revealed, but his first name remains a mystery.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender for Abbott Elementary, Davis was asked if he knows what Mr. Johnson’s canonical first name is or if there are plans to eventually reveal it. While Davis does not know the answer, he expects that it will not be revealed until the series finale, and he believes the show can get more mileage out of it by keeping it a mystery. Check out Davis’ comments below:

Whatever it is — which tells you I don’t know — I’m pretty sure it will be revealed in the last episode of the last season. I’ve thrown out suggestions about that too!

I’m sure it will be revealed at some point, but I love the fact that it hasn’t been revealed yet. I think we can get a few more miles out of that.

While Abbott Elementary has been renewed for season 6, the show’s creative team has not shared any plans to stick to a specific number of seasons. This makes it difficult to know when the series finale and the potential reveal of Mr. Johnson’s first name will happen, but season 6 is the earliest that it could occur.

Between high viewership on ABC and Hulu, four Emmy Award wins and 30 nominations, and a near-perfect 99% score from critics and 90% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the mockumentary sitcom has been a massive success and does not appear to be slowing down following the season 6 renewal. As a series that is more character-driven than plot-driven, there is still plenty to explore as Mr. Johnson and* *Abbott Elementary’s other characters tackle new challenges in the world of education and help the students thrive.

Even though Abbott Elementary’s episodes are primarily set inside the school, some installments take place outside of it and provide more insight into the characters’ personal lives. This includes the faculty going to a karaoke bar, attending a Philadelphia Phillies game, and Mr. Johnson going to the DMV to get a REAL ID. If the series chooses to divulge Mr. Johnson’s first name, it will have to choose between one of these outside settings or whether the secret will come out during work.

In addition to Mr. Johnson, the main characters are Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson), Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams), Ava Coleman (Janelle James), Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti), and Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph). Abbott Elementary’s guest stars include Ayo Edebiri as Janine’s sister Ayesha, Taraji P. Henson as Janine’s mother Vanetta, and celebrities like Bradley Cooper and Kevin Hart playing themselves. Brunson is the series creator and is a co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker.

Abbott Elementary releases new episodes Wednesdays on ABC and the next day on Hulu.
