Dark Winds has never been a show that wastes time, but as Season 4 heads toward its endgame, the pressure is clearly getting even heavier. AMC’s acclaimed crime drama has spent the season building a web of danger around Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, Bernadette Manuelito, and the people caught in the middle of their latest investigation. Now, with just two episodes left, the series is setting up what looks like one of its most intense hours yet.
Collider is debuting an exclusive first look at Episode 7, the penultimate episode of Dark Winds Season 4, ahead of its premiere on Sunday, March 29 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and AMC+. In the new episode, Leaphorn and Manuelito find themselves racing against the clock to save Billie from Vaggan, while Chee recovers and is forced to confront a painful truth about his past. At the same time, Billie reconnects with a long-lost family member, adding another emotional layer to an episode that already sounds packed with danger.
Executive produced by Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin, Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon as Lt. Joe Leaphorn, with this season also marking his television directorial debut. The core cast also includes Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee, Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito, and Deanna Allison as Emma Leaphorn. Set in the 1970s, the series follows members of the Navajo Tribal Police as they investigate increasingly violent crimes on the reservation.
Season 4 has also brought in a strong lineup of new cast members, including Franka Potente as Irene Vaggan, Isabel DeRoy-Olson as Billie Tsosie, Chaske Spencer as Sonny, Luke Barnett as FBI Special Agent Toby Shaw, and Titus Welliver as Dominic McNair. A Martinez also returns as Acting Chief Gordo Sena.

Collider’s review stated that Dark Winds Season 4 continues to prove why the series stands apart from everything else on TV, delivering another gripping chapter that builds on its already high standard. Michael John Petty’s review highlighted McClarnon as the show’s anchor once again. After everything Joe went through in Season 3, this version of the character feels lighter, more reflective, and quietly hopeful. It’s a subtle shift, but one that gives the season emotional weight and shows just how far he’s come.
“One thing Dark Winds has always done so well is balance its main cast with big-name guest stars and recurring faces without overshadowing its main players in the process, and the show once again succeeds here. If you were worried that Dark Winds may begin to dip in neo-Western quality over the years, don’t be. Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito have plenty of spirit left to keep the show going for many years to come.”
Dark Winds airs on AMC at 9PM ET on Sunday, March 29.
