Nearly all of Hollywood’s big A-list stars have tried their hand at starring in a big-budget space sci-fi movie, but some have received better reviews than others. The reception often comes down to the source material, if any, and the other creatives surrounding the project, like writers and directors.
Even Brad Pitt, who was further cemented as a star with his performance in the 2021 blockbuster, F1, has starred in a big-budget sci-fi epic with Ad Astra. The film was released in theaters in 2019, and despite only costing $90 million — a relatively modest budget for the space sci-fi epic genre, which can often reach into the $200 million+ range — the film grossed only $127 million at the box office. However, it’s rewriting history on streaming, where it’s become one of the most popular VOD purchases on Apple TV in several countries around the world. Fans in America can stream Ad Astra for free on Tubi, but act fast, because it’s unclear how long it will remain on the platform. Ad Astra follows an astronaut who embarks on a space mission to investigate a threat and uncover the truth about what happened to his father 30 years ago.

Brad Pitt’s next movie is expected to be The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the spin-off of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. The first trailer for the film was released during the Super Bowl, and although it’s still lacking an official release date, it will likely premiere this August. Pitt has also been tapped to star in a new action-adventure film, Heart of the Beast, which is being directed by David Ayer. The film kept Ayer from returning to direct the sequel to his 2024 action hit with Jason Statham, The Beekeeper.
